I recently got an american deluxe telecaster. its from 2009 so it had been in the store for a while. anyway when i got it home it had three deepish scratches in the finish kinda look like claw marks. i was just wondering if anyone knew a good easy way to remove the scratches or if its not worth the hassle.

If you can feel the scratches w/your fingernail, they are probably too deep to remove. Finer scratches on both body and pick guard can be removed with a good quality car wax applied with your fingers and some determination. Now wait..we will see a lot of posts telling you not to do this because of the silicones in car wax making touch ups impossible. This might be an issue if you ever plan to have part of the body refinished. I know I never plan to. It would cost less to buy a new body. Use a good guitar wax afterwards. Good luck.

Post pics of the scratches and you may get more ideas on what you can do...

Surface scratches such as pick scratches or swirl marks can be removed quite easily with a rubbing compound or scratch remover. Anything deeper can only really be repaired by filling the groove with some form of filler compound, and then a refinish would be in order.

well take it to a local luthier and see what he can do for you.
if you feel that strongly about it then get it checked out for a piece of mind anyway.
you could always try the billy mays paint touchup pens.

Depending on how deep they are I would take it to a good guitar tech and ask him if he can buff them out on his wheel. It's not that expensive to do and he can tell you up front if he thinks it can be done. There is also the super glue option. Fill the scratch with super glue, let dry, fine sand, then buff. The problem is that whereas lacquer blends to itself when spot patching polyester does not. And there are many types of super glue. I recently had a ding repaired on my Yamaha SA2200 using the super glue method. But I let someone who really knows what they are doing take care of it for me. Glad I did. It came out great.

Strandman, did he have to repaint when he repaired the ding, or was he able to steam it out? Or, was he able to just fill it with super glue then sand? It sounds like whatever he did turned out good.
