hi people,

my 72 tele deluxe(run through a marshall mg15) seems to have a problem with the volume pots. I have had it since last june, although I have never noticed this before-doesnt mean it hasnt been like it before though.

On both pickups, with the amp turned up so i can hear small changes, there seems to be no sound coming out of my guitar until the volume is turned up to about 5/6. Is this common? Or is it supposed to happen? Is it hard to fix?

Thanks,

teledeluxe72

It's a very common thing with cheap pots. Just grab some quality replacements, solder them in there and you'll be golden.

Thanks- I was quite worried... This leads me onto another question-are there any other cheap parts on my telecaster(classic player 72 tele deluxe) that are likely to go wrong, so that I can look out for them?

It's probably pretty safe to say that your toggle switch won't be too far behind. Beyond that, you should be pretty good to go. Those are the main parts that the Mexican guitars really skimp out on.

Get two 500K CTS solid shaft audio taper pots for your replacements, since you have humbucklers in a 72 Tele Deluxe.
The 500K pots may also resolve your sound problem, if your guitar has 250K pots.
You also should get a 400V .022µF Sprague "Orange Drop" Capacitor.

You should be able to get these at Antique Electronic Supply: http://www.tubesandmore.com/
A lot of places try to rock you for the Orange Drop.
I've seen this less than $2.00 component listed for as much as $14.00!!

Mexican Teles may have one of two types of switches.
If your switch, looks like one of these "Mega" style switches, replace it.

If your switch looks like this Oak Grigsby switch, which Fender uses in its American series guitars, you need not replace it unless there is an obvious problem.

This is a CRL 3-way switch that Fender used in from the early '50s all the way into the '90s, when they switched to Oak Grigsby (both CRL and Oak Grigsby are owned by Electroswitch). The CRL switch is probably the best quality Tele switch you can get and it is still made in the USA.
