I'm attempting to purchase a telecaster as a surprise gift. I know nothing about guitars. I'm looking for general info on the telecaster. What do I want to look for? (what's the difference between the models, finishes, what's the best/worst, and which stores can be trusted, e.g guitar center, sam ash, musicians friend). Thanks for any info provided!

All three of those stores sell the same products; there might be a special run for a certain store, but all three will generally have the same basic Teles. Compare and save. Be sure the person you're buying for likes Telecasters, or that thing will be on eBay faster than you can walk out the door; same for all other guitars, for that matter. Or, you can send it to me since my b'day was last weekend
I own a MIM (Made in Mexico) Telecaster Standard and a MIA (Made in America) American Standard Telecaster, both with the standard maple neck and ash body. I wouldn't prefer either over the other, but I prefer them both over all other Teles so you may want to take the person to the store with you or take a Tele player to the store to try out a few.

Hector1 - you are a great man to buy a guitar for someone. Please don't go in "blind". As a minimum bring someone who knows guitars with you. They are a very complex and personal item depending on the skill of the recipient. To avoid making a mistake, you might consider giving a substitute like a great picture with a note saying pick one or perhaps a few pages off the Fender web. That way not only does the receiver get the joy of the presentation but also gets to do their own choosing. Many of us, if not all, spend too much time thinking about our next guitar acquisition and that really is a big part of the fun.
This also avoids the problem of making an uninformed selection, which is not your goal.

Good luck and I'm sure all will be well.

Welcome to the forum...Its hard to buy a guitar for someone else because of feel or comfort while playing. But from my experience Sam Ash has a 30 day return policy so if the person your buying it for don`t like it they can exchange it.
If its a gift you might want to take that person to the store and let them make their own choice.
