I just bought a new Tele FSR (MIM) with Vintage Noiseless pickups in both positions, and the neck pup is SIGNIFICANTLY louder than the bridge pup. I lowered the neck and raised the bridge all the way but it only made a slight difference. When it's switched to bridge only, I don't get any output until the volume pot is at around 5. I opened it up and all the wiring appears as it should. Anyone have any ideas? The capacitor is an IC 503Z which, I understand, is a piece of junk. Could that be the problem?

'503' is just another means of marking - 50 to the power of three decimal pf or 50,000pf which is 50 nf, so actually .05uf. That will give more bass response than the .022. The Fender 250K pot kit comes with the '022' H is a tolerance +/- 3%, z is 20%.

I thought Bridge always had more output than neck.

I may be wrong but Bridge handles rhythm and had more bass, thus thumper sound, bigger sound.

maybe your pickups were accidently switched when they were being made?

The strings vibrate more over the neck so that pickup will always have the fuller output. Set the bridge pickup where you like the sound/volume the most, then raise or lower the neck pickup to balance the volume output. If the bridge pickup is too close to the strings it can sound harsh. Each pickup is different, even of the same model, so don't be surprised if you have to set the neck pickup almost flush with the pick guard to balance the two; it's just a setting, there's nothing wrong with that if you like the sound it gives you.

I'm aware that neck output will be greater than bridge output, all else being equal....but not this much. As I mentioned earlier, I tried moving the neck as low as possible and the bridge as high as possible with very little effect.

So I unsoldered the pups and broke out the ol' multimeter. The neck is measuring 11.9, right where it should be. The bridge is measuring zero, nada, ziltch. It amazes me how a brand new guitar can have a bad pup right out of the box! Don't they test these things? What is it, a Gibson? :-) Oh well, it's off to the service center.

:?: Firstly, no need to unsolder anything to check the pup resistance, just move the selector switch to another position to open the circuit and allow the pup to be measured . If you had some sound output from the pup, the reading can't be zero, that would be a short and you would have no sound at all out of it. What is the possibility that you've messed up the pup and/or voided your warranty by un-soldering it?
