Hey guys, just got a Fender American Deluxe Tele and its fantastic. When I got it home and was playing it unplugged I noticed a rattling. I traced it to the back if the guitar, just where the neck joins the body. There seems to be a loose screw or something rattling around in there and I can see it when I hold the guitar up - it would fall over the hole on the backplate, which I assume is for the microtilt adjustment. I was wondering, can I take this backplate off without the neck coming off or should I just leave it alone?

You can't leave it alone for the obvious reasoning. That screw most likely is from/for the tilt neck.

The neckplate can come off without removing the neck entirely. However, it is a clumsy procedure getting enough play to where you can back off the neckplate.

Obviously, you will have to loosen the 4 screws which go through the neck to some degree while holding the neck firm into it's body pocket with the other hand as best you can.

First, loosen all the strings so that there is marginal or no string pull on the neck. Next, with one hand, hold the neck in place while with the other hand, you back out the 4 screws. While still holding the neck in place and the screws backed out, you'd have to maneuver the guitar to where that little allen screw falls out. You'd then have to screw the plate/neck back in (all 4 screws firmly in a criss-cross pattern but don't tighten for "dear life") and then, thread the screw through the tilt hole, making sure that you don't screw it in to the point of where it actually starts lifting the neck. Once you make contact with the back of the neck with the screw, you're done. In other words, the second you feel the slightest resistance from the neck on the screw, stop.

Thanks for the reply! I was actually able to get the screw to bite on a few threads and I tightened it slightly so no mire rattling. I hope I haven't adjusted the neck by going this! Mind you, I only gave it a few 1/4 turns with the Allen wrench. I have two mire questions:

1) How will I know if I have adjusted the neck in any way?
2) Why is the micro tilt system there? Is it really necessary?

You're quite welcome.

1. The guitar will have gone out of tune and the action will have gotten lower with a possibility of your uppermost frets cutting out.

2. At the risk of sounding sarcastic: So the inept can raise or lower their action by the turn of one screw where at the same time, they knock their intonation and the rest of their guitar out of balance as well. No, it isn't necessary at all. Personally, I feel it should be removed.
