It may be my amp, but I find the tone of the Baja completely unusable when the guitar volume knob is on full (10). Set this way, the tone I get is shrill, piercing, messy and generally unpleasant.

Yet, when I roll the volume knob back to 75% a whole world of nice tonal nuances come to live, particularly that snappy, nasal and honky tone that Teles are renowned for.

Do others notice a similar pattern or do you play yours on full volume?

I don't have a Baja personally, but with single coils, I find that they generally sound better when you roll the volume back a little bit.

Naturally that was my first thought. But then both my 62RI Strat and Am Deluxe Strat sound pretty good through the same settings. It's only my Baja that sounds shrill and bright on full volume.

Try playing with your pickup's height.
Preferably do lower them and see what happens.

So lower results in less treble?

Generally speaking, having your pickups high, may result a lot unwanted things. Excessive treble maybe one of this.
Maybe not.
But it is the first step to take when you're dealing with such things. And the most inexpensive and reversible.
Level your pickups to the pickguard and start from there.

As a general rule I play with my 70's Twin Reverb turned wide open on treble, mid and bass and a bit of reverb (volume "to taste and need") and my Baja...I adjust to the needs of what I'm playing.

For leads and with certain effects pedals, wide open. For smoother, more nuanced things, rolled back a bit. I also, roll back the tone about 20% at times to smooth out the screech which, at other times, is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered>

It could be that the pickup is microphonic and needs to be re-potted. Tap the tone/volume controls, if you can easily hear it through your amp this may be the problem. Its common on tele bridge pick ups.

Besides adjusting the pickup height, try the Greene/Fezz/50's Mod. Move the wire from the tone pot to the middle lug on the volume pot instead of the outside lug. The wire from the tone pot will end up on the lug thats going to the output jack. This changes how the controls interact with the pickups. It's an easy mod, takes about 5-10 mins. You can find a schematic to it at http://www.singlecoil.com. Go to the guitar link and you will find "A cool Tele tone pot mod".

I hope one of the suggestions helps, because if you can't get a decent tone out of that thing with the volume on full, something is very, very wrong.

Your pup heights should be set at +- 1/8 inch for a starting point. I know that doesn't sound like a lot but it will look that way on you guitar.
