I have a question for you telecaster owners out there...I will be purchasing my first Tele Here in a few short months. I am getting the American Deluxe model. I've only played the Deluxe once, but thats all I needed due to the fact that I fell in love with it right off the bat.

But anyways, The one I played had a rosewood fretboard, and I was looking at some of the other colors and fretboard options and I fell in love with one particular color with a MAPLE fretboard. Is there Big Tone difference between the maple and rosewood fretboard?

Thanks guys!

Nothing that a tweak of your amp can't compensate for.

Not "big" and I agree with Martian.

I do find a bit more *snap* playing unplugged with a maple board Tele though.

I don't believe a tweak of the amp settings will make the 2 woods sound identical. They will be close for sure. But with a maple fretboard, there will always be a slightly brighter attack to your sound. Unless you just have to have the absolute twangiest sound possible, I doubt you would miss the maple. I personally like the feel of the rosewood boards a little better. Sometimes the finish on a maple fretboard catches your skin when bending (like if you start sweating).

Hello fender1010,

First off congrats on a new guitar, the Deluxe is one of my favorite necks. I have used the specs of the neck on several builds that I have made myself.

While I prefer the feel of a maple fretboard, I believe the Rosewood fretboards are easier to refret.

I personally cannot tell the tonal difference between the two boards, and I would challenge anyone to be able to name the fretboard being used simply by a blind sound test. I find all the tonal arguments amusing (Maple vs. Rosewood, Ash vs. Alder, etc). Listen to any record and see if you can name the wood of the body or fretboard just by the tone. I doubt many can. Most people still don't realize that the majority of Led Zep's first four albums were all Tele's and not LP's. It's all in the fingers, pickups, amp, and EQ.

I think the biggest difference between maple and rosewood is how it feels under your fingers and if it makes you want to play more.

Post pics when you get the guitar.

Have a great weekend,
Don

I've never noticed a negligible difference between the two. For me, I like the look of maple boards. But I have guitars with rosewood and ebony fretboards as well. For me it's more about looks and feel than tone.

Difference in appearance and feel: yes. Difference in tone: yes. Difference in tone that anybody who is not a guitarist will notice: no.

Doth is actually correct on this one. The only differences that fretboard woods or body woods have on a guitar period, are when they are played acoustically. Once plugged in, it all goes out the window. Remember, your pickups (magnetic) are what actually determine your sound. You pickups pick up your string vibrations and the alloy of your strings will make a difference but there is no way in the world that any magnet will pickup on your choice of wood anywhere on the guitar. Your guitar could be made out of concrete and your pickups would not know the difference. So, if you spend most of your time playing your electic guitar unplugged, then yes, you can possibly hear subtle difference in woods, but once you are plugged in....all of the other myths are just that.

Enjoy your new Tele. I have an `07 Am. Deluxe Tele with a maple fretboard and love the guitar. It`s one of the best Fenders I`ve had and your going to like yours as well. Post a picture when you can, I`m sure we`d all like to see it.

I am not one that hears the difference in fretboards but I do feel the difference.
Maple feels nicer.

I'm a huge fan of the maple necks also. They just feel better....and they fact that to me they look better is just icing on the cake! I have a Tele that has a RW neck, but I prefer maple on my Tele.

Enjoy your new Tele!
