I just ordered my first Telecaster, hopefully it will arrive soon. In the meantime I want to get everything ready for her when she arrives.

First off, the Telecaster I ordered is one of those ugly-as-sin Joe Strummer Telecasters. Don't laugh, but it is the one I wanted. I have had a gorgeous Stratocaster for over twenty years so I never even thought of a Tele. However, the price was right on these Joe Strummers and I wanted a guitar that I wouldn't baby, so I laid out my cash and bought her. Now I have a question or two.

1. I want to replace the pickguard. Can the pickguard be removed and replaced without taking the strings off?

2. What gauge strings are factory installed on Telecasters?

3. I often used those bullet end strings on my Strat. Do those work on a Tele? What Fender strings would you recommend for my new Tele? Must be Fender brand. (I'm like that - when I play my Fender I use a Fender strap, use Fender strings, a Fender pick, play it through a Fender amp.)

Thanks for any help.

Here are the three Fenders I own:
1. American Stratocaster
2. Fender Squier I painted to look like George Harrison's Rocky
3. Jazz Bass MIM

Hi,
saw you post. I'm in a quandry as to what type of telecaster you ordered, but as a rule, the strings would have to be removed before removing the pickguard as the neck pickup is mounted in the pickguard. If someone can actually remove it, they're awful good. As for the strings, most fenders come with 9-42 guage strings.

super bullet strings are perfectly acceptable to use, however, I would use the nickel plated steel type. the solid nickel doesn't hold it's tone very well. super bullets are highly recommended for Strats but the plain ball end strings work just as well for a Telecaster. The bullet ends work better for Tremolos. I personally use fender and EBs on my American Std. Tele, both seem to do fine for me.

Hope this helps somewhat.

The Tele I ordered is the Fender Artists Series Joe Strummer Telecaster.

Thanks for the help with the questions. I have 9s on my Strat, I guess that's what comes shipped on a Telecaster.

On my 52RI and my cheap fake Tele, the pickguard easily comes off. There is room between the neck pickup and the strings, to slide it out to the side.

I changed my Tele pickgaurd just last night. I loosened the strings so they were real floppy and easy to pull up on to get room for the pickup to slide by the body.
I was nervous about scratching the finish so I slid the package that the new gaurd came in between the pickup and body. I also had to adjust the pickup hight screws to make it easier.I changed from solid black to black perloid.
It really fancied it up.

Yeah, I thought it can be done without removing the strings or the pickups. Thanks.
