The "ashtray" affects the magnetic field of the bridge pickup thus creating eddy currents which do in fact affect the tonality of the pickup. The metallic composition of the "ashtray" also factors into the equation too. However and as has been stated, there is a vastness in perception among the vastness of players as to what any given person perceives as the true, definitive Tele tonality; "ashtray" not withstanding.

well said!!!

The so-called "ashtray" got that name because most people took that cover off and some used it as an actually ashtray. That was the first thing I had to do -- just to be "official" --when the 52RIs first came out in the early '80s and I had to have one. Leaving the cover on does very little to affect the tone, but it sure will mess up your playing if you are the type who mutes at the bridge or sometimes picks close to the bridge pickup. It was originally only made for Teles as a cosmetic consideration, to cover up the works underneath, and not to somehow enhance the sound.

Regarding the distinctive Tele sound itself, this comes from the entire combination of factors -- the type of bridge pickup, the plate underneath it (if included), the type of bridge plate and the type of bridge pieces. Further down in effect would be the type of body wood, neck, fingerboard, and even the type of frets. As you change or remove items from the original Tele design, you begin to move further and further away from that original and classic Tele sound. I love a Tele with two hot humbuckers, a Floyd Rose bridge, and an ebony board, but it sounds totally different than my more classic-design Teles. You could say it is a Tele in neck and body shape only. I have one that sounds more like a Les Paul than most of my friends' Les Pauls do. How cool is that!?

Finally, there is something very distinctive in sound about the standard old Fender stamped bridge plate. The same is true for the eddy currents produced by a good plate under a Tele bridge pickup. I find that much over 8.5 to 9k ohms on a Tele bridge pickup starts to lose the "Tele sound" as well -- something to be mindful of. Down the line, you can throw in things such as strings-through-body, type of body wood, and type of fingerboard wood can make a noticeable difference, too. Some people even claim they can hear a difference in using stainless steel frets, but that's one option I haven't tried yet. I get good mileage with the so-called nickel-silver frets and no problems.
