Hi there,

I have a Japanese 62 Reissue Telecaster Custom with a stock neck pup and a Bare Knuckle Pickups Pile Driver in the bridge. I have had this guitar now for a fair few years now and only noticed this one problem today when changing the valves in my Champion 600 amp and testing it out. I had the usual hum from the amp when I have my guitar plugged in (I was using a premium Koil Kord cable so ruling that out) BUT then noticed that only when I touched the volume knob that I got a loud hum/buzz through the amp. It didn't happen if I touched the tone or the control plate just the volume knob. I don't know much about grounding and guitar electrics so putting this out there for some advice. Is this something that just happens and I have always missed, Is it something that is common with Champion 600 amps OR is this a grounding issue with my guitar that I should go get checked out/fixed??? Any advice or light on the subject would be a great help! I am going to my practice studios next week where I can see if it happens going through my Blues Deluxe.

Rob.

Welcome!

Chances are, that volume pot has had it.

Hi there Martian,

Thanks for the Welcome and swift response!
I guess as this has to be done I might as well upgrade the tone pot at the same time and get all the wiring checked, etc, I got a lot of gigging coming up. In your opinion which would be the best replacements/upgrades for these?

You're quite welcome. Definitely replace both pots and while you're at it, if your selector switch is one of those plastic encased jobs, change that too.

CTS brand pots are most adequate without going overboard on high priced 'boutique' pots; I use them myself.

Any time!

While you're at it and for only a few $$$ more, you may as well have your output jack changed to a Switchcraft brand.

Yeah why not eh! May as well do the complete overhaul while its opened up! I've tracked down a supplier that does complete kits, I am UK based.

http://www.axesrus.com/axeWiringTele.htm

There a quite a few options and got a bit confused by them all. Is it basically the switching that is different on these set ups? I am guessing mine will be the 52-67 wiring set up?

Actually, the 67 to 88 would be your best bet.
