I play fingerstyle - even on the tele. I currently have 10's on it and the action is as low as I can get without any fret buzz. It's lower that Fenders setup guide say to set them at. My question is if I go to 11's will I be able to lower the action more?

I think I understand that the heavier the string gauge the less movement in the string as it vibrates. So if that is true will that lead me to be able to lower the action some more?

Kind of a related question on bending strings. Do you have to bend heavier gauge strings less distance to get the same change in pitch. In other words to get a whole note pitch change do you bend 10's furth than you would 11's to get the same change?

Thanks
Tony

Hello Shotgunone,

I am only speaking from my own experience here. I find that heavier strings can be set up with lower action and less buzz. Lighter gauge strings seem to "flop" around more to me and buzz more (not that the buzz comes through the amp). However, at some point, your action will become so low that it just can't get lower no matter the size of the string.

To answer your question on bending strings, you don't need to physically bend a heavier string as far as a lighter string, but the movement requires more effort. You can see the difference if you bend on your current strings from high e to Low E. I personally have more trouble bending lighter strings as I tend to over bend and have less control of pitch.

Hope that helps,
Don
