I always liked Strats over Tele`s, until I played one. Theres nothing to study, go to a music store and play one. If it feels right buy it, if not stick with the Strats. There are many different Tele models so it depends on your budget. See what falls into your price range and make your choice.

What type of music are you going to be using it for will make a big difference as to what model you might like. There are several different body woods, vintage to modern neck profiles and a lot of different pickup combinations. The Tele is a good guitar for modifications to suit your style. Find one that plays well and make it your own. Now if it's a vintage or collectable model I would'nt recommend any permanent modifications such as refinishing or body routing. If your looking at a new model the Squire CV50 is causing kind of a stir. It's reasonably priced and not a guitar that I would have a problem with doing up grades to. Even though they are both Fender guitars, the Tele and Strat are two different animals. If you've played for a while you'll figure it out and have fun with it. Good luck! :)

Well stated, idacaster. I started out being a Tele only guy, but through the years I've picked up a fair number of each. I still love Teles, but romping the blues down here in the Music Room, I generally end up playing a Strat. Back when I first started playing there wasn't much variation in the Tele lineup, but today, whew, anything you could want. I'm looking at adding one of the humbuckered Blacktop Teles to my collection soon. If you're going to mod one out, go with one of the Squier models as idacaster suggested.

I personally have gotten the most versatility out of a hot alnico pickup in the bridge, and a humbucker in the neck. I never really went out on a mission to get one. I just ended up getting it in a trade and now it's easily my go-to axe. I cannot ever imagine how I got along without it. Tele's made me love bridge single coils and humbuckers in Fender guitars.

The only thing I miss about the strat are the two in between positions.

Here's a great looking FSR Ash Tele with Vintage Noiseless Pickups that is due out soon:

If you like Strats, You've got to love the "Blackout":

The Highway One is a less expensive Tele with 22 frets and a nitrocellulose lacquer body finish:

On up the ladder you have American Standard, Deluxe and the 52 Reissue.
And if all of these great Teles don't grab you, check out the 12 Fender 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Model Telecasters that are being released this year:

Never knew about this. It looks pretty nice. Do you think the inbetween positions sound pretty stratty? For the price it's probably a pretty decent axe. I'm interested.

I've never played a Blackout, so I don't know how they sound. You can get one for around $600.

I've always liked the look of Telecasters with two chrome covered pickups, since the first time I first saw the "Telecaster Plus".
I don't know what year they were made, but it has 22 frets and were apparently MIA.
Wikipedia states that the Telecaster Plus and Deluxe Plus models, which the ones below appear to be, were all replaced by the American Deluxe Telecaster in 1998.

The Telecaster Plus looks like it has a traditional Tele neck pickup, while the middle pickup looks like a Lace Chrome Dome that is sized like a Strat pickup.

It doesn't look the Blackout is set-up like that. It looks like the Blackout uses two Tele neck pickups in the neck and middle position.
I think the Blackout look a lot nicer than the Deluxe Nashville, which has a Strat middle pickup without the chrome cover.

Here's a picture of a beautiful "Telecaster Plus" (Deluxe Plus) that I've considered recreating:

For more information on the Telecaster Plus, see:

Here's another gorgeous Telecaster Plus.
The owner of the blue Tele Plus was apparently able to remove the obnoxious writing on the chrome pickup covers.

The Blackout still has a decidedly Tele tone, the in between positions are nice but the middle pickup sounds very nice. Whatever the specs of the 'vintage single coil' pickups, they sound sweet. Fit and finish on my Blackout is also very nice.

One option for mods is to mod a tele bridge pickup in a strat and see if it works.

The flames are actually vinyl pin-striping meant for cars. It was actually rather difficult to apply the flames evenly, but I went slow and it came out really nice. I like the custom look.
