Hi I just bought a used mexican tele. I hooked it up and it seems to have a hum/buzz. Other guitars I have don't do this. The position of the guitar seems to change the hum a bit. the quietest position is jack edge facing the amp. Any thoughts or helps to make this go away? thanks.

it could be static or perhaps lose wiring

Some things to try :

Shielding (many ways (copper tape, foil, paint), try google).

Pup swap (adding/changing to HB or Noiseless).

Good guitar cable (not the cheapo $10 Radio Shack ones).

Good luck with it and welcome to the forums !

Is this common? its an '05 model. Are there issues with these? I opened it up and it seems all connections are solid. What do i shield? I have a friend who is better with fixing guitars than me but how do i know what to shield?

Also any suggestions for a nice bridge humbucker pickup? I want a pickup that has some beef to it. thanks for all your help.

Put a dryer sheet under the pickguard.

Not all mexicans are created equal...you must understand that. I dont know why, but from year to year, lot to lot, model to model...they vary in everything from quality of freting to components. Must be the tequelia breaks...or lack of QC. The newer ones are supposed to be much better in quality overall, I don't know. Somewhere between them using all American componets to thier own individule assy.s, something happened...or didn't.

Mine BUZZED, hummed, whatever you want to call it:

I replaced all the wireing with comerical wireing. Why? It was very poorly insulated, cheap, five hair (I couldn't even call it wire).

Don't believe me? Take the cover off the pots and switch: just toutch any wire and see if it doesn't hum more or stop depending on the wire being a ground or not.

You don't need copper tape... You can use insulating electrical spray found at Lowes....take your time and give it three coats in all the cavaties. Letting each one dry about a day. Do it right and you won't have any issuess. Just prep it so you don't get overspray.

I have changed out everything from the switch to the wires, to the pickups Its a great ax. Sweet as any 900 dollar one...and the right potentiator can change that.

I also found mine was wired for a four way and had to rewire it.

Every thing I did made it better before I even changed out items.
1. Re wired to correct three way.
2. Re heated all conections to assure no cold soldiers.
3. Did increase the Imput/plug in ground wire size...that made a world of difference right off. I changed out the rest when I intalled new pots and pickup.
.4. Spray the cavaties with electrical insulating shielding from Lowes.

The Pickups were about 8 and I replaced the bridge with an Hotter Alinco I 50..which made a world of difference. I'm replacing the neck.

Changing the wires and pots to good old 250 american made CTS post made the biggest difference. I went to a 22 capacator as well and another on the volume pot...(that gives you a full range of open voicing on volume.)

I'm thinking a STR 3 and TBX set up now....The body has great resonence, though heavier than most for some reason...

Redid the frets and replaced the strings with some D's and its amazing.

i know this doesn't help, but it's a good story.
when i was in the studio a few back my guitar was buzzing uncontrolably and we could not figure out how to stop it. so i took a peice of wire w/ aligator clips on both sides and hooked it from the tuning peg to my glasses to ground it. that's it. i now have my tele shielded and it seemed to do the trick. 8)

LOL!

Two easy things: coper shield the guitar with a kit from: http://guitarelectronics.zoovy.com/product/WAK1

and get a better guitar cable...like a higher end Fender shielded one or one with a built in shield.

a $50 furman grounding unit for your amp may help.

If your using a 'head', then make sure your using Sound Cable and not guitar cables to the speaker box....

Is that clip always on your glass's? or for creative writting...LOL!
