Hi there!

Just got my new Fender Blacktop Telecaster today, this is my second guitar, and I notice that when I turn up the volume on my Fender Champion 600 amp, it has a very noticeable hum. When I touch any metal parts from the body it makes a "pop' sound and hum goes away, but as soon as I untouch the Guitar the Hum comes back. Probably a shield problem on this guitar right? I tested my other guitar, with also has 2 humbuckers and no hum comes out from that one. Any help on how do I fix it would me very appreciated, I cant return the guitar I bought online from the USA, and I live in Brazil.

Thanks in advance!

Possibly a ground issue. I can't say for sure, but that's what it sounds like.

I have a blacktop Tele too. No noise problem at all. Yours must have a problem (probably with ground)

Thanks for the reply, do you think it will be a good idea to buy some cooper tape and cover all the insides?

Did it hum at the store or at a friends house? I would try it at other locations first before tearing into the guitar (which may void the warranty). My house was built in the 50's and the grounding is quite suspect in certain rooms, with certain lights or appliances on, and can vary based on the guitar I am playing.

I would trouble shoot this way:
1. Try another of your guitars with the same amp and cable at home
2. Try another cable at home
3. Try another amp at home
4. Take guitar, amp and cable to a friends house/guitar store

If it is still only the Blacktop that hums in all of those scenarios, then you know the grounding issue is with the guitar. I know you mentioned you live in Brazil, but it may still be covered by Fender Warranty. If not, it isn't a huge deal, just find a qualified tech and the problem can usually be sussed out for a small fee.

I too have an almost new Blacktop Tele and it's very quiet with my Fender Blues Jr, Boogie 5-25, and Peavey Classic 50, but hums with my Peavey Classic 30 so I have to assume the problem is with the amp and not the guitar. I'd try it in a friends amp or one at the guitar store and see if it still makes noise.

Hi Tube Fuzz,
The "pop" is probably static electricity that is coming from touching the pickguard not the strings, which would ground out the electric charge that is being picked up by your pickup. The hum that is quieted when you touch the strings is probably a ground loop problem.
Adding grounded copper shielding in the guitar cavities that contacts and grounds the back of a copper shielded pickguard, should eliminate the popping.
You cans also try fabric softener on the pickguard, which will minimize static electricity.
To completely eliminate the hum (assuming that you are using noiseless pickups), you may need to go to a "star grounding system."
See "Quieting the Beast" at Guitarnuts.com.
"Star grounding" solved this problem for me with noiseless pickups.

Hi there everyone, thanks again on helping to solve the problem.

Doth
My house was built last year, and it is supposed to have all the outlets grounded.
I did troubleshoot changing the Blacktop for another guitar (Crafter Convoy SP "PRS Copy type") with same cable, same amp, and with the Crafter plug in, the hum is very low, I almost cant hear it. So first I thought the problem is the Fender Blacktop, cause the Crafter does not hum. But I also realized that although both guitars have 1 humbucker on the brigde and 1 humbucker on the neck, the Blacktop might have a lot more gain on its output, which could explain why the hum is more noticeable on the Blacktop. I also noticed that the blacktop makes my amp breakup earlier at volume on 5 which mean it has more gain right?
When I plug the Fender on any battery powered amp, it is quiet as a baby sleeping.

I'll try it at my brothers home on his Marshall MG100DFX when possible! Thanks

Yes the pop happens when I touch the Humbucker, or the metal plate on the knobs. Not when I touch the strings. Thanks for the tips, I will try to make a shield myself next time I change the strings. Then I will post here the results.

Thanks to all who gave me help. The problem is solved, it was a grounding issue, just changed my socket adapter to another one with the ground pin and now everything is clear. No more hum at all. The amp and the guitar are perfect! :D
