Hey thanks for looking at my post i rely apricate the help. I have been doing some trades on craigsllist latley and i came across a Jim root tele for 500$. its in perfect shape and conditon so of course im gunna buy it but the one thing that worrys me is the serial # starts with MSM. Its made in mexico. So i called my local guitar center and asked them what they thought and they said thats its a great deal and some tele's (expecialy sig. tele's) have weird serials. They also said Jim root tele's are very hard to fake because of the plain white finish. (its the white finish w/ black pick guard and ebony fret board). They said the onley way to telll if its real would be to take the neck off and look for the stamps. I just wanted to know what you guys thing before i go and drop half a grand on a guitar that might be fake. Thanks for the help!

I just found a photo of a Jim Root Tele's headstock - it looks like the serial number starts with an "MSN7" - you might want to look closer because I don't believe that Fender has ever used an "MSM" prefix. I suspect that Fender simply is using up an entire stack of "MSN7" decals on their MIM Signature guitars; I know the Root Teles didn't come out until the mid-2000s but this one that was at Elderly Instruments had what would normally have been a 1997 serial number. Here's the photo I found:

Elderly no longer has this one in stock; I found their archive page through a google search but here is the link to all their photos:

I just don't think someone would fake a Jim Root Tele; there have been plenty of them around, they aren't too terribly expensive to begin with, and they have pretty unique features.

That would be a little silly to fake this model. I don't know its history, even when first issued, but the "M" is certainly Mexico. My new Blacktop Tele starts with MX and the X is new to me. Sounds like a great deal, though, especially if in top shape.

Fender dropped their old serial number system in 2010 - under the old system the first letter on basic USA (which became the second letter on MIM guitars, USA Deluxe guitars, and USA Signature guitars) told you what decade the guitar came from. So a "Z5XXXXXX" would be found on a USA 2005, "MZ5XXXXXX" would be found on a 2005-2006 MIM guitar, etc.

Well starting in 2010 Fender first used a "10" to indicate "2010" on the USA guitars. However, by about May or so they switched that to "US10" - "US" for USA and "10" for the year. When the MIM numbers changed over last year they began using "MX10" decals - "MX" for Mexico and "10" for 2010. Since MIM numbers change over mid-year the MIMs went straight from "MZ9XXXXXX" numbers to "MX10XXXXXX" numbers circa July 2010. Also they are no longer using the other prefixs as of 2010 - so no more "D" on the American Deluxe, no more "S" on the Signatures, etc.

Sorry - kind of wordy, but hope that helps.

took me a while to understand but i think i get it ;). The jim root is a 2008 ( not completly sure but they were made in 2007 and 2008 i think) so the s would stil lbe valid for signiture. So i have come to the conclusion that the s MSN mean signiture.
