I have thought many times about doing that too and have decided that there are too many skills involved with starting from scratch or close to it. Not only should you have first class woodworking equipment but putting a finish on it that I would be happy with is an art that is learned through trial and error. Instead of buying parts, I recently bought a Baja Tele and changed out the string trees (GraphTec) and pick guard for a "little custom feel" and will probably put on a compensating saddle in the future. Also took the time to set it up properly. By buying the guitar already finished I got a beautiful body, well mounted neck and I get to play with the rest.. and I can add on when cash is available, if I want. I think my chances of making my perfect guitar, first time, are slim and none and I didn't want to settle for second best.
Just my take on it :?

Here's a nice Peavey Tele I picked up several years ago: good price, three PUs and a great sound, especially through Fender amps!

I've now been looking for the peavey I played but I can't remember the artist it was named after!!!! Does anybody know? I played it about 5 months ago, had a maple fretboard, "v" neck, jumbo frets, bluish/greenish body (hard to remember now).

I think of a "copy" as a playable one from Rondo Music for $100-150. After that, get the real thing and pay whatever you want up to the price of a new Porsche.
I did buy a Douglas thinline from Rondo, it's made well with binding on body and F hole, it plays fine after a 20 minute setup.

Hey bud, for the price that you could get a copy, you could get an MIM of somesort, those would probably sound better anyways.

I found a couple of very good tele style guitars on e bay new from a co called great instruments in calif. I bought a semi hollow body for 250.00 it was set up near perfect has humbucker style pickups. I bought another yellow in color for 157.00 this one I plowed in a P/G B bender to see how much work it was and it turned out great. The brand for both guitars is Gatino made in china. Check them out there service was very good and there instruments are good quality. Horton
