Rossfloss,

Your Tele will be fine with 13's. You may need to adjust your TR, Action, Intonation, and recut your nut, but the neck and the TR should handle it fine. Telecaster's were designed for much heavier gauge strings than modern players use.

Many people equate the gauge of the string to tone, but I believe your pickup and amp settings have far more to do with tone than the gauge of the string. Billy Gibbons, who many consider to have a monster tone, plays with 8's or lighter.

I, myself, prefer 10's as they offer the best compromise between playability and tuning stability for me.

Have fun and post some pics of the Custom!

First of all, +1
Thanks for the info. I definitely made sure to adjust the action and truss rod. I didn't mess with the nut though, but it seemed fine from the looks of it.

Since starting this thread I've gone back down to 11's. I've been practicing guitar more often and my fingers were not getting enough time to rest in between rehearsals, making 13's a bit too tough.

I definitely agree about pickups and amps having far more to do with tone, for sure. From my observations though, I don't notice any real difference when changing string sizes on humbucker guitars. But with single coil guitars I do notice a bit more. I can seem to get chunkier rhythm sounds when I use 11's or bigger.

I use 9's and 10's on my Les Paul and usually 11's on my strats and teles. For the most part though, like you were getting at, the differences are trivial.
