As I've posted before, I'm looking into a MIM tele. I play pretty hard rock and read about these:

Any word on these? It's got great reviews.

Don't know much about them as I've never played a tele with them. One thing I do know is I don't like a PU that requires battery changes. Good luck and I'm sure a member can give you a better review that me!

Never been a fan of EMG's...always seemed to sound the same and a real lack of tone IMHO.

Enjoy,

T2

i agree. they were real popular in the 80's. the guitars that had them got pickup changes real quick if it was mine lol.
dont lake to change batt either. isnt it enough to worry with pedals needing them changed? lol

I'm fine with that $@!& haha, I have a OneSpot for my pedals, so I don't care about changing a battery that supposedly lasts a long time in your guitar every once in a while. From what I read on MF, people were singing the praises claiming these EMGs would allow you to keep your Tele sound per se, but adds a little more "crunch"

Another option to get more crunch and rock out of the Tele is to try a different amp rig. Most cone tweed deluxe 5e3 put out over 15 watts vs the originals 12 due to their modified transformers and caps (hence, more clean headroom). In fact some use 6L6 powertubes for more power. These amps with a Tele and a ceramic speaker will give you upper midrange bite, and tight bottom punch. Those with big AlNiCo speakers will get you loose bottom and creamy top overdrive. With the right pickup height adjustment these amps can make any decent non-active pickup sound huge.

If you wanna play hard rock on a Tele and want EMG's, may I suggest a Jim Root Telecaster, it's MIM and already has EMG humbuckers, an EMG 81 in the Bridge and an EMG 60 in the neck, it's a fabulous guitar. It would probably cost you alot less than getting MIM Standard Telecaster, the EMG's and making a route for the battery. I hear that can be quite expensive.

Run your Tele through a Marshall JCM 800 or DSL 100 and you'll get plenty of crunch. You'll never think about changing the pickups again however you may have to change your shorts.

My Schecter Hellraiser has active EMGs (81/85) and I have only had to change my battery once since 2007, and that guitar got a ton of use with my last band. If you don't leave the cable plugged in when you're not playing, the battery will last a long time.
If you play heavy music with the gain up high, you'll probably love the active pickups. They're pretty much a one trick pony though. If you play more than just heavy music some passive humbuckers would probably be a better option. Dimarzio has several different stacked humbuckers that will fit with no additional mods to the guitar

I don't know anything about which model they are, but I've used EMGs before -- dead silent and, if you have to buy your own 9v batteries, don't leave your stinkin' cord plugged in overnight!

I have video of Roy Buchanan playing the first edition of EMGs made for a Tele. Guess what? He sounds just like Roy Buchanan.
