Hey everyone, this is my first post here. I've been looking at MIM Teles to become my main guitar now. I play in a band, but we're not yet doing enough to justify me blowing $1,000+ on a guitar, but from the reviews I've read about MIMs, is that they've really come a long way and for $500, they seem like the best bang for my buck. Plus, that leaves me with bucks in the future to customize the MIM as I see fit in the future. I tried one out at GC to see if I liked it, and I really did like it.

I play in a hard rock band and switch lead roles with my Strat playing fellow guitarist. I currently play an Ibanez, but I found the clean tone on a MIM to be excellent and warm. If anything, I'd switch the bridge PU with a mini humbucker.

What's the general consensus on MIMs here? From what I've read on Musician's Friend, They're very high quality instruments. I got my bass player bitching at me about wanting to buy a MIM, but I loved the way it sounded and want to know the facts before digging in the ol' wallet.

Thanks for the advice,

G

Oh Heaven's help us, someone else is now pulling the top off a vacuum sealed can of worms!

Seriously though my friend, go into a store, pick a couple guitars, close your eyes and have them hand them to you. And play. Let your fingers and your ears tell you and stop looking at the da##ed headstock.

My $00,000.02 worth is we're living in a golden age of guitar production right now. A CNC machine turns out necks with greater precision, down to a 'thou or better than a human ever can. And it doesn't matter where that machine is making sawdust, here, across the border, or even overseas. Hand finishing is what drives the cost up, and the MIM's have greatly reduced labor rates. Overseas, even more so. So there's that.

I've seen even the overseas Squiers look pretty darn good for how they're put together. Now I'll admit that the electronics of those are not the greatest. But if you're going to be playing somewhere that the beer mugs might start a'flying you might consider one. And you should *always* have a backup. Who knows what may go wrong in the middle of a gig.

Go look at a couple of MIM's. Even try a couple of Squiers. Remember you may be buying something now that will serve as your backup axe later.

If your bass guy is gonna gripe about it, get some electrician's tape and cover up the headstock so he'll shut up. (grin)

I've had an MIM Tele for 4 years now and I wouldn't swap it or change it for anything,it's just a great guitar in every way.Check out the Squier Vintage modified Tele SH with a neck humbucker for $549.99 or the Vintage modified SSH with 2 single coils and a neck humbucker for$549.99.The pickups that come with MIM Teles-and Strats-are superb just as they are and don't need to be swapped out like some people would have you think, they are great right out of the box.BTW don't let the Squier name scare you off either as they can be of excellent quality too and often are far better than other guitars costing hundreds more.

Edit: I just noticed that it's the bridge humbucker that you wanted,in that case maybe the Vintage modified Tele Custom would be more up your alley at $399.99 of course it has 2 humbuckers though. The V.M. Tele SH though has a Duncan design Tele Stack bridge pup which is very hot .BTW welcome to the forum.

Thanks, fellas, that's exactly what I've been saying. Everyone's caught up on the Mexican thing, when the guitar sounded awesome. I'll definitely check it out. The bassist said the wood was crappy quality and "warps easily", something I find doubtful. I assume if I take care of it, it will take care of me.

Also, what say you guys about people saying Tele's can't rock? We play radio-ish rock but we get pretty heavy and play a lot of drop D. That's why I thought of sticking a Lil 59 in the bridge, but what do you guys say?

Any guitar can play any style. Yes, it contributes its own sound like spices in food, but the hands on it make all the difference.

And like I said before, go play a couple, from MIA to MIM to overseas models. Let your hands and ears tell you what's good.

Just on general principles, go to a big electrical supplier, a Home Depot or Lowes and you can find electrician's tape in various colors. After you buy what you want, tape up the headstock.

Then tell your bass guy to shut up and play. (grin)

Of course, after you make your decision, report back here.

With pictures!

Yeah, I'm still hearing the bitching, I pitched the idea of a Mexican Tele to a near-riot, the only one who doesn't care is the other guitarist, who I look up to a lot. I'm going to a shop tomorrow and playing whatever feels best and may the best guitar win.

If your budget only allows you to get an MIM Tele ask the bass player to kick in the rest. Then see how much he complains about the MIM Tele your buying. What does he think it is, a cookie tin with shoe laces ? Their good guitars....

Well, I wanted to save a few bucks, but my wife encouraged getting an American one. I can't wait to get it.

I am an MIM believer. My MIM Tele is by far my favorite guitar. I could easily have left the store with an MIA model, but nothing felt as nice in my hands as the MIM blackout Tele I bought. The wood on MIM guitars is no different than on MIA guitars, and if your bass player thinks there's something magical in the wood here in america, I got a house with an ocean view for sale in Nebraska he might be interested in
