Welcome to the forum....that serial number on the plate can be checked and that will let you know the year its made and what model you have.

Hi Devin...posting a picture of that headstock would help and you can open a free account with Photobucket.com and upload your pics from there. If you have a local music store bring the guitar in and let them run the serial numbers with Fender and they should be able to tell you more about the guitar. I was buying a guitar on ebay and he was trying to pass it off as an American Standard Tele, but the neck looked like it was a Highway One even though the body was buffed to a high gloss. I had the music store run the serial numbers and it was in fact a Highway One. So next time around, try to run the serial number first. I know that`s too little too late, but keep it in mind the next time you buy on the outside market. After that experience I only buy guitars from a reputable music store.

USA reissues have waterslide headstock decals that are applied on top of the finish; that's the way Fender did them back in 50s and 60s (I think they were first under the finish circa 1968; could be as late as 1970 before that changed).

I remember seeing a few of these a when they came out - they had the same headstock decal and serial number on the bridge as the "regular" American Vintage '52 Tele. Your chambered AV Tele is a very cool guitar - and this is coming from a confirmed Strat guy.

Cheers mate, I was playing it earlier and the tone is nice enough to convince me anyway...
I was a strat fan but I love the lower end on teles. :)

I just purchased what was sold as a Fender Chambered Ash Tele for £725 (haggled down from £800) from a man who I deemed reputable and likable.

...there is only a 'Fender Telecaster' logo on the front of the headstock, and it's only a decal. There's nothing on the back of the headstock, nothing on the neck plate except a CE sticker and a serial number of 'Fender Pat. Pend. 46091' on the bridge.

So, in your opinion, have I been 'had'?

It would be great Devin, if you could post a picture of your Tele.

I assume that you have a 2004 NAMM Limited Edition '52 RI Tele. I researched these guitars for another thread. Here is what your Tele should probably look like. I doubt that there are any other body finishes. I would imagine that some had maple fretboards, but your headstock and the Fender logo should look like the one pictured below. The only serial number is on the bridge (assuming that it's actually a serial number and not a bridge patent or model number). Fender Customer Service should be able to tell you. The strat switch knob and the Barden bridge pictured below are not original.

2004 NAMM Spruce Top Chambered 1952 Reissue Telecaster
Transparent Cherry Burst Nitrocellulose Lacquer Finish
Swamp Ash Reissue with chambered body and book-matched spruce top
Maple / Rosewood Neck (similar to '62 roundback) 7.5" radius
No-load Fender "Delta Tone" tone control
Flat head 1952 style pickguard screws
Period correct Kluson style tuners
The serial number is stamped on to the bridge plate
Barden bridge and saddles (shown below, probably did not come with the guitar??) are an add-on
"Ash tray" bridge cover included
7 Pounds
G & G Tweed Case, Orange interior
Approximately 100 built

Not sure if it's the Transparent Cherry Burst discussed there.

Personally I think the Chambered Ash guitar devin42 is talking about has a crimson transparent finish and a 3-ply black pickguard like the killer twangy axe pictured below:

Did Fender make other Chambered Ash Telecasters in other years?
I also have no idea if the 2004 NAMM Teles came in finishes other than Transparent Cherry Burst.
The description that ther is no serial number on this guitar, except for the number on the bridge, is consistent with how the limited edition 2004 Chambered Ash Teles have been described. All other Fender guitars that I have ever seen have the serial number on the headstock or on the neck plate.

Wow, I left this for a while!

The second, crimson tele is the one I'm referring to...

Having taken the neck off, it reveals a May 2004 date - the date on the body is around 20 days different. Is that unusual? Would ringing up Fender sort this out?

I have same CS guitar which exactly matches all descriptions in this thread - serial number on bridgeplate is about 250 lower than this one - so not a patent number but definitely a 52 vintage reissue guitar.

Would love to know what the pickups are because actually I find them a little harsh - maybe they do not suit the chambered/spruce top as well as a standard RI 52.

That apart I love it - also the fretboard radius I think is more like 9.5 than 7.25 , I know that because I struggle a bit with 7.25 boards. Maybe the 7.25 maple boards just feel more radiused because they are slippy ..

Confirm delta tone control.

Small wrangle is that the bridge seems off centre - strings to far to bass side IMO - and the bridge kind of looks 'off' - you can even see the pickup route peeping through

But ! apart form those fixable issues it has a unique sound and kind of has a body breakup tone when thrashed
