I want to buy a Telecaster to play rhythm for my son. I will most likely play through a Peavey Classic 30. I have a distortion and chorus pedal.

We play a wide range of tunes from classic country tunes like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard to Skynard to ACDC. I know no single set up will work perfectly with everything, but buying three or four guitars is not an option for me.

I am playing an Epiphone SG right now. It belongs to my son who recently got a Gibson Les Paul. Based on our experiences with two epiphones...there is no comparison between the quality of the Gibson brand compared to the Epiphone. So...I am leaning toward an American made Telecaster.

Having said that, Fender is a completely different company and the MIM models may well be as good as the USA models. I couldn't care less where it is made. I want good tone in a product that lasts. I will go to the dealers and play the different models before purchasing.

I would love to hear advice on which pups are the most versatile for playing a variety of music. Again, I am not expecting to get Izzy Stradlin's rhythm sound perfectly and be able to play Folsom Prison Blues with exacting tone the next set, but I am trying to buy a versatile guitar.

Any advice is apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have an MIM standard Tele and find it extremely versatile. Especially with a decent OD pedal there isn't much it can't do. You'll most likely find that a standard MIM or standard American will suit you just fine for rhythm work. Just make sure when you try them out you get to play them through an amp as close in spec and sound as your own. There's no point playing it in the shop through a Marshall when you all you have at home is a Champ.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi Borntohunt, welcome to the forum.I have a Mexican made Tele and it's a superb guitar with all the treble bite of an American made Tele so much so I actually have to rollback the tone most times that I use the bridge pickup alone. The build quality and playability are first rate also.Puzzled to hear that you have quality issues with the Epiphone,I have 6 and they're all of exceptional quality and playability.Lately Gibson has had more problems with quality control than Epiphone but I guess that there's exceptions to every rule.

Thanks guys. I really haven't had trouble with our Epiphones. I just mean they do not compare to the Gibson Les Paul my son recently got. The Epi's do fine, the sound just does not compare.

Hey Borntohunt:

theres 2 things going on here.

1) You're looking to play live, and cover a bunch of different songs. I play in a coverband going from "U2 Without or Without you" to "Choir boys Run to Paradise" to "Bon Jovi Wanted Dead or Alive" and everywhere inbetween. I have many guitars, but I gig with 2 teles, one with single coils (Am Spec) and one with humbuckers (MIM Blacktop). You're playing through a decent amp so the main difference you to to take care of is Humbucker midrange vs bell like single coil tones. Doesn't matter what Fender tele you get, but I would recommend you get one with single coils as you have the humbucker quota well and truly filled.

2) On the amps section of this forum, you will find a user called Supro63 who once said something along the lines of "The average punter couldn't tell if your guitar tone is incorrect at a gig" (paraphrased). Unfortunately he is well and truly correct. This is why I have a Line 6 Pod XT. It's basically a cheap multieffects pedal, that could do my "With or Without you" sound, my "Van Halen Jump" sound and my "Dire Straights Money for nothing " sound. A couple of Fender amps do EXACTLY the same thing but aren't floor based units to use with existing amps, they are the Mustang and G-DEC, quality units apparently. Now, whilst most "purists" would frown at using something like this, it is a bloody cheap way to sound 90% (85%??) accurate for ANY song you can think of without buying a studio's worth of amps, effects and cabinets. And since the average audience member can only tell the difference between a clean tone and a distorted tone, 85%/90% accurate is gonna sound EXACTLY like the song for them.

Fender has a dedicated website for all the tones in the world (https://fuse.fender.com/), you search for the song you want, download the tone, plug your amp into your pc/mac and you're playing the exact patch in 2 mins. All you have to do is supply a single coil or a humbucker (because the source tone still does matter). Line 6 has the same thing for their products, so does Digitech and zoom.

So my advice is get a Tele BAJA OR a Blackout Tele (not a blacktop, blackout tele has 3 pickups like a strat), cos those things are bad arse MIM teles in their own right, and lets face it, you need a tele cos you're missing out at the moment. Then rent, borrow or try out from a store a stand alone multieffects pedal with modelling (that is, it's not just effects, it also models amps and cabinets) for a good day or two, playing around with all its features THROUGH YOUR PEAVEY CLASSIC AMP and see what you come up with.

And most of all enjoy the tele :)

My Deluxe Blackout Tele is a very versatile guitar. It has 3 pickups as opposed to the typical 2, and it has some awesome tones available. I play everything from blues to country to hard rock on it.
Also it is a MIM model, but the quality is great. fwiw...I had enough cash for an American made model and still chose the Blackout.

Good luck on your search. Whatever you do choose, you can't go wrong with a Tele.
