I'm new to the telecaster forum as I currently own a strat; however, I have saved up enough money for a new guitar and really want a telecaster. My friend convinced me to look American and not get a mexi tele. So... the three teles I'm looking at are: American Standard Ash Tele, American special tele, and 72 deluxe tele(One humbucker at the neck and a single coil at the bridge). Any input on those?

It really comes down to what sound you are looking, the music you play and what the guitar feels like to YOU when you play it. Of those listed I would go with the Am Standard first, but that is because I personally am not a fan of the Am Special. I feel it is just a Hwy 1 with Tx Special pups which i don;t care for and a poly finish instead of nitro. I'd take the Hwy 1 over the Am Special any day. The 72 is a bit more versatile because it offers bucker tones in the neck and single coil in the bridge and allows you to cover a lot of bases. So for those listed I'd go Am St, 72 then the Am Spcl.

BUT, your friend convincing you to not look at the Mexi-Tele's might cost you to miss out on a great guitar. YOU are the one who is going to be playing it and YOUR opinion on the feel, fit, finish and tone is what matters, not anyone else's. I definitely wouldn't overlook several of the Mexi-Tele's especially if I found one that I bonded with. The Baja is a sweet tele as is the classic 72 series custom. The Mexi-Te;e's are simply much better than the "purists" and "Am made only" advocates will ever let on.

I say play as many Tele's as you have a chance to play and find the one right for you and only YOU. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

I don't know why or how your buddy talked you out of getting a Mexican made Tele, he most likely one of these that has the old yet many times debunked notion that Mexican made Teles etc are inferior guitars.I have an '04 Mexican Tele and it's a great guitar with all the spank and twang as an American made Tele.I doubt very much if your friend were blindfolded he'd be able to tell mine from American made one,in fact I doubt anyone would.
The misconception that anything made south of the border is a poor guitar has long been proven a crock.Granted back in the early days the Mexican made guitars had sporatic quality control that no longer is the case. You'd be well advised to try out some of the Mexican made Teles and could quite likely find the guitar that was perfect for you and save yourself hundreds of dollars in the meantime.

MIM Tele right here:

I had enough cash for pretty much all but the Am. Dlx and the MIM Deluxe Blackout was by far the best feel to my hands, and the tone was unmatched IMO. Don't overlook the MIM's just because some else doesn't like them. Unless your friend plays guitar with your hands he will never be able to tell you what guitar is better for you. Just me 2 cents.

Hi,

I have an Am Special and a MIM Blacktop, both are stellar guitars IMO. And thats really what it comes down to, what your opinion is.

Find yourself a "decent" music store, take your amp down (or make sure they have your model) and play a few different ones in your budget for as long as you can. if you can't make up your mind, leave, come back in a couple of days, do it again.

Thats how I did it when I went in to buy a Epiphone Les Paul and walked out with a Am Std Strat and ended up falling in love with fenders. The only person you have to please when it comes to buying guitars is yourself.

If you want guts and super clean sound, put on Seymour Duncan. The beauty of these pickups is that when you overdrive them, they retain the crunch and guts with a hint of a dirty sound.

Of those 3, I like the Am Std Ash, but as others have said, check out some of the others like the Baja, Nashville, etc. and you'll find one you like!

I have a MIA standard Telecaster and I love it, very versatile and feels great...but I also had a MIM standard telecaster for about a week and it sounded and felt just as good as the american standard and except for the "made in mexico" printed on the head stock and the different finish on the neck I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. I only bought the MIA version because I on principal try to buy American manufactured products when I can.

If you need an amp and are better with money than me, a MIM telecaster and a Blues Jr. would trump an American Standard for your needs more likely.

My go-to guitar is a MIM Tele with humbucker on the neck and single at the bridge. Fender has just come out with a newer version of this guitar in the Road Worn Player series. I have not played one of these yet but I suspect it will be a great guitar. I hope they will also produce it without the road wear.

Definately check out the MIM teles...and the esquires too unless you really need that front pickup...I remember when the Japanese guitars first came out, there sure was a "its a japanese made guitar...no thanks". Now those are going up in value a bit and are widely accepted as the great guitars they are...play a bunch with a blind fold and your ears open and you may be surprised what you like...then look at where it is made.

Enjoy

I picked up a used, mint MIM Classic 50's in white blonde. I put a black 3ply pick guard on it and it sounds, looks, and plays terrific. Best $300 I ever spent on a guitar.
