Can anyone tell me if you can change the 5 hole pickguard w/o removing the strings? It appears the pickup is not screwed to the guard like the 8 hole tele's and strat's, so you should be able to just slide it off under the strings. Also, does anyone know where you can get a 5 hole, 3 ply pickguard? I know it takes away from the original look, but I think my blonde classic 50's would look nice with a black 3 ply.

Go to warmoth.com. You can customize your own pickguard and for your question, yes you can take it out without removing the strings; just loosin the strings a bit. But the 5 hole pickguard may not fit a new 8 hole because of the neck pickup. there are no screws to place the pickup and the guitar itself underneth has a large openning. The earlier 5 hole teles didn't have this, so I suggest going to that site. I did the exact same thing with my tele's pickguard!

Grab a tee shirt or polishing cloth, fold it over a couple times, and run it under the strings between the pickups, then slide it up past the neck pickup and rest it on the last few frets to raise the strings. It'll make it easier to slide the pick guard off. Slide the pick guard off toward the treble side (them skinny strings).

Well I can honestly say I learned something today. Didnt know Teles had 5 screw pickguards until 1959. I'll go to bed a little wiser now :)

Here is a little more info too. I did the same thing yesterday on a MIM new Tele.
It had a 5 hole white guard (vintage look Baja) and I replaced it with a 3 ply black/w/b one. Looks great. Bought it from WD Music Products. Check the web.
Here is the kicker - current pick guards may not line up on MIM Tele's made before 2003. Apparently some dimensions were not closely controlled so be careful if yours is older.
Also in case the new pick guard binds a little, I found that a Dremel tool with a fine green tapered grinding bit does a wonderful job in removing some of the plastic. Take your time and don't rush. After a little work the new one fit like a Custom Shop job. (almost) :D

I did the exact same thing w/my Baja. Strings stayed on, no dremel necessary - it was real easy. Looks so much better now!
