I've been watching Claptons Crossroads DVD set and have become captivated with Derek Trucks style playing. He plays an SG, I'm green to all this, have never seen an SG let alone heard any other than Dereks.

Can you make that type of sound with a Tele that Derek gets out of his SG?

Anybody out there play an SG-if so, whats it like compared to the Tele(feel, fit, sound, weight, neck size, anything you think of)

thanks
Daryl Crisp

Pretty much everything matters.....SGs have humbuckers (teles have single0coils, SGs are made of mahogany (teles are made of ash/alder and maple).....I'll put it simply, they're basically two different guitars in almost every way imaginable.

As stated, pretty much everything. The SG has a set neck, as opposed to a Teles bolt-on, the SG has a 24 3/4" scale as opposed to the Teles 25 1/2" scale, the SG has a Tune-O-matic bridge, and most Teles are string thru the body, the SG has 2 humbuckers, the Tele has 2 single coils, the SG has tone and volume controls for each pickup, the Tele just has master volume and tone controls, the SG is made of mahogany, the Tele is usually Ash or Alder, though there are some mahogany ones, and I am sure there are other differences, but you get the idea, they are pretty much 2 different beasts...

I own both an sg and a tele. They are polar opposites as stated before. Honestly the best way to get an idea would be to go to your local guitar store or honestly any guitar store. They'll most likely have an SG and a tele. Try them out and figure out the differences for yourself. Also keep in mind that theres a lot of variety within each of the types of guitars. For example American Deluxe tele, tele thinline, tele 72 deluxe etc. Also the difference between the SG and the 61 sg's or reissues is massive too. Just go and play around. Thats the best way to learn about it. That and looking up information on the internet...

I've got both a tele and and sg too. they're two completely different things, particularly since the tele is an 05 Am Dlx and the sg is a '61 reissue. the tele has a much better balance, the sg is neck heavy, although overall it's at least 2 pounds lighter than the tele. the tele is mor eversatile IMO, you can play both rhythm and lead with the tele while the sg seems more suited for just playing leads. The tone is alot different too, the tele has a much more twangy sound to it, while the sg sounds fatter. I'd suggest going out and trying a few sg's out to see what you think. You can't make a tele sound like an sg, even with humbuckers in the tele and you can't make an sg sound like a tele, even if you dial it back to 5 on the volume, 10 on the tone and strum it all the way by the bridge.

Totally different guitars with totally different tones. Like comparing bananas and prunes.

like terrapotomus said, Tele's vary so much from model to model, that its not even practical to compare any one guitar to a 'tele' cause the range is so large.

Daryl the Gibsons tend to be bassy and the Teles tend to have a twang kinda sound. The SG is more widely used in metal by groups like ac/dc's angus young, black sabbath's tony iommi and Led zepplins jimmy Page.

Most people consider sg and les paul more metal sounding guitars and Teles more for alternative rock or country and a nice twangy blues.

However guitarists like john5 of marilyn manson prove you can play metal with a Tele and play it well. Alot of people consider the Tele the best rythem guitar on the market, heck jus look at some Tom petty or Bruce springsteen or rolling stones videos they are all made with teles.

Check youtube for homemade vidoes of both guitars and you can decide for yourself which sound is right for you. There really is no "best guitar" it's more of what is the best guitar for you.

Also don't forget Joe strummer of the Clash he plays a tele and proves it sounds awesome in punk rock as well. I very may well get his signature guitar soon..

Actually Jimmy Page used a Telecaster for a lot of the early Led Zep albums and also on the solo for Stairway to Heaven, and I think Jimmy page is more known for the double necked SG and single necked Les Pauls at times, but those first few albums, and here and there throughout Led Zepplin, you'll find a Telecaster. And once again, the Iommi-SG marriage sort of happened by accident as he switched from a Strat to a SG during the recording session of the first album when a pickup on his Strat went bad, but that first album was probably written on a Strat cause that was his main guitar until the pickup went out....

Yes i had heard that tho every picture ive ever seen of Page he is holding a Gibson. Wonder if he stayed with Gibsons for good or if he went back and forth depending on the record or song?

I'm not sure about "back in the day", but I think I read that during the Led Zep reunion a few months back he switched around on Gibsons and Fenders depending on the song....
