My tech has an actual 1972 Tele Thinline Deluxe (with the two humbuckers). All I can say is... the quality of today's Fender guitars is light years ahead of that period. The neck joint/pocket looked like it had been cut by a 5 year old. With the neck bolted on, there must have been still another 1/4" of body route sticking out past the bottom edge of the neck. The fit and finish of the whole guitar was poor. I can see why "pre-CBS" was once a key component when buying a vintage Fender. That being said, I would NEVER purchase a 70's Fender guitar sight unseen (aka, online).

So really, those MIM reissues are actually probably head and shoulders above the originals. I'm very pleased to play my modern Fender guitars.

Despite those issues, that guitar is worth at least 3 times as much as a reissue. Sad, ain't it O__o (Those thinline reissues are nice, it was either that guitar or mah Hot Rod)

It is sad. If a company today tried selling guitars with those 70's QC issues, there would be no way they'd be able to get away with it. People today quibble over such minor imperfections yet those old ones could be absolute dogs.

Today's MIM's are fine guitars.

Quality control in the CBS years wasn't consistent at all and was much worse than in the pre CBS years.Granted there were occasional dogs in the pre CBS Fenders but due to cost cutting in the interest of boosting profits a lot of production practices suffered in the CBS years.

I purchased a MIM reissue '72 Tele Thinline about a month ago and am really enjoying it so far. I'm impressed with the build quality.

I always wanted a Thinline but already have 5 Fenders, plus 6 other guitars. I noticed and purchased a Douglas copy of the Thinline from Rondo Music for $159 the other day and I am impressed. I know what your thinking...but the fit, finish, and wood tone are beautiful. It has nice cream binding on the body and "f" hole. I took it out of the box, checked the tuning and intonation, then played it for a couple of hours and was very happy with it. It isn't humbled at all by my Fenders.

I have heard of the horror stories about CBS Fenders. But I have never seen anything but good ones. I own 4 CBS Fenders, and none of them have the issues I hear about. Sure, they have the thickest poly finish the world has ever seen, but they will be with us forever lol. I do agree that the quality of today's guitars are very good, and very consistent. But that's because of the modern machinery. Still, old wood.......old guitars, they do feel and sound different. Too bad you didn't like the 72 Thinline :( It is a valuable instrument regardless......maybe you can buy it CHEAP and sell it :D Or use it as a vintage axe you don't mind to take out and play!

I never said I would NEVER buy a 70's Fender, I just said I wouldn't do so sight unseen (ebay, message board, online in general).

I would buy one over the internet if there were plenty of pictures and the seller was willing to answer all of my questions. I for one like the feel of those thick 70's Fender necks! :D The reissue's come close to the feel of the original necks from the 70's, but they still are not quite right. They seem a little too thin still, whereas the originals you can really feel that U shape.
