And am generally quite happy. You can tell it's not made with the best woods (and mine is quite heavey), but it sounds well and given this is my first Tele I am pelased.

Question: I use a Marshall Vintage Modern 50W valve amp and so far found that the Baja sounds kind of harsh, shrill and cold with the guitar volume dimed (especially on gain settings). Also the diffrence between teh various pick-ups is less noticeable when the guitar volume is on full.

However the sounds really opens up when I roll the guitar volume back and I really like the sound of all pickups at 75% of full volume.

Have other Baja users found a similal sound response with the guitar volume dimed?

Congrats on your tele. You need to talk with forum member nikininja about your problem and combination with Marshall. I remember him giving some good advise on the same setup the other day. Enjoy!

Good choice of Tele's, I think your on the right track, just keep experimenting with all of your controls (guitar/amp) Im sure you will settle in soon

Yes the pickups are shrill when dimed. Especially the vintage bridge Broadcaster PU. But there are no numbers on the knurled knobs, so who would know? But seriously these PU's are low resistance and tend to be thin sounding. But the TWISTED Tele PU is unique in sound, and the combination sounds are just dreamy, especially in conjunction with the S-1 switch.

I always have the volume in the 50% to 75% area, where you can have a smooth sound and move into the snarlier sounds. Just turn your amp up good and loud so you can have a smooth sound and with a volume increase the breakup will satisfy. I also use pure nickel strings which keep the glassy sound minimized. Steel and nickel plated steel are good but the the guitar sounds shrill to me when using them. With these tips I have turned to this guitar for more the versatile sounds, even more than my Strats.

Mine weighs 8.8 lbs, but I don't mind it as it always sounds good. :D

I purchased a Baja last month (my first Tele) and I agree with the heavy !!! Think it was made of waterlogged swamp ash  but I love the tone and the soft V neck.
Since I never dime it, can't speak for amp settings.
It is definitely a keeper though.

Does the wiring include a 0.050 mf cap between tone and volume cap on those Baja?

I find that with all guitars, they sound far more balanced with the volume rolled down to around eight. Providing their wired properly and not losing all treble the minute you touch the volume control.

Are you playing the thing with the S1 down? I ask because I find similar, very shrill, little difference between positionsns 2&4.
With the S1 up I thought the sound varies only nicely.

Hi Niki

I think you have a point in that most guitars sound more balanced with the volume rolled back a touch. It is certainly the case with my Vintage 62 RI Strat (not so with my Les Paul, which sounds great even with its volume on full).

Nevertheless, I often roll my Strat's volume up to 10 when I need an extra push and its distorted sounds is good (not excellent but good).

However, the Baja sounds that extra edgy and shrill compared to the Strat, which was a surprise to me, as I thought it would be fuller and warmer. May be I need to adjust the picksups height a little bit, but at the moment I can't get a good distorted rhythm sound out of it with its volume on 10. I need to experiment with lower volumes, but as Qpblue pointed out - there are no numbers on that volume knob so it would be tricky to adjust

Do you play yours through Marshall?

Yeah always
Though I always have my Marshalls set to Treb 0, Mid 6-9, Bass 7-full. Whatever I put into em.

I notice with my KK head that if the bias slips or cools too much, the high end will just dominate everything.

Make sure that S1 switch is in the up position.

So you don't use the out-of-phase sounds at all?

No not really, not for anything slightly serious. Their far too thin out of singlecoils.

With the Bill Lawrence Qfilter they worked, cos you could drop the treble without losing clarity. Aside from that I find em next to useless. The four S1 up sounds are what made the guitar for me.
