hi, i have a fender 'standard' tele, made in mexico, and it has one of those plastic looking finishes, which pretty much looks like it has a layer of glass around the body. i cant remember what the finish is called but i would like my tele to age nicely. the colour is arctic white.
will it actually start to wear down? (which is what i want) or will it allways look new?
cheers

Smarta$$ answer: Yes, provided time does not stop it will age.

Answer you want: Your guitar I believe has a Poly finish. It will age, but not like finishes in nitro like you see in custom shop relics and so on. It will come off in chips and chunks and also yellow over time. Here's the difference in picture form:

Warning: Sarcasm!

Why no sweetheart, your guitar will live it life outside of the space/time continuum.....

I am reminded every morning when I get up that everything ages as time goes by, so yes it will age.

Yes, it will age. The maple in the neck will age and turn darker, more orange-ish, over time, and so will the white poly finish. The finish on the body will age slower than the neck / fretboard. You can speed this process up a bunch by playing the guitar outside in the sunlight, and playing in smoky bars or clubs! As for will the poly wear though.......yes, on the fretboard ( if maple ) and on the body it can, but will take a long time, a very very long time cause poly is hard and THICK. Your poly finished guitar will probably never wear to the point it looks like SRV's Number One!!!!!! At least, not in YOUR lifetime lol. But your guitar will turn more yellow / orange if you leave it out of a case and play it in a variety of places regularly :) I actually love it when a maple neck gets to that aged, orange-ish tint. Also like stated above, Poly doesn't ding as easily as Nitro, rather, Poly will bust off the body in large, ugly flakes that leave a rough surface when damaged!
