I need some Tele experts to help me. I'm looking to find a used Tele to open G banjo tune a la Keith Richards. I don't want to spend a ton because this is a project. When I go online (ebay, craigslist, guitarcenter) I get a bunch of noise and would like to narrow my searches to Teles that have a humbucker in the neck position and a single coill at the bridge, I also need a six string sadddle. Can someone help me narrow down my search to specific guitars like the California edition, some Custom 72s etc. Also if any body has some experience with 5 string banjo tuning especially in conjunction with slide playing please pipe in. Thanks.

You can customize a tele body with a humbucker in the neck pos. On warmoth.com for around 600$ and then get a fender neck with the stuff you want.

Find a good used Tele in the $300-$400 range(MIM or Squire). If it's a Squire you'll probably find a new one in that range. Have a good quality humbucker installed, if it doesn't have 6 piece bridge install one. If your able to do the work youself great, if not it shouldn't be that expensive and still will be under the $600 figure. As far as the "banjo" tuning goes, Kieth only uses 5 strings. He doesn't uses the 6th string. When I play a song like "Brown Sugar", I tune like this. Starting with the high string D,B,G,D,G,G. Both of the lowest strings are tuned to the same note instead of removing the lowest string so I can retune standard. If this is going to be a dedicated "Kieth" guitar remove the lowest string. Personally I probably wouldn't buy a guitar online, I would want to play it first, but that's just me.
