Hey folks, new to Fender Forums, nice place here! Got an interesting question for whomever can answer it.
I'm a Gibson guy but I love all things guitar.
A co-worker recently asked me if I would do some clean-up on an old guitar he's had since 1973. Now, I haven't seen it yet, but he says it's a Fender and his discription is 100% dead on Tele. Serial number he provided points to 1966 (F164605 off the neck plate). He bought it used in 1973 when he was in college at the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks) and it came with a Fender Twin Reverb for $400. I've almost got him convinced to sell it all to me, but at what price? I don't want to back door him as I have to work with him but I also don't want to pay museum prices. I know the guitar has been in the original hard case in a closet for at least 30 years, so I'm assuming it's in pretty good shape. The amp probably hasn't been plugged in for the same period.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Things I need to watch out for when cleaning it up?

Thanks in advance...

I just looked at EBAY, they have three 1966 Tele's. #1) '66 Tele, pink(refinished), maple neck for $6,500.00 #2) '66Tele , blond(good shape), maple cap neck for $8,619.66 #3) '66 Tele, blond(good shape) maple neck for $12,500.00. As you can see they're not giving them away, what did you expect. If the one your buddy has is in as good of shape as the last two, he really has something. On the issue of the clean up, becareful! You have guitars so you probably understand that. If you don't have experience on the setup or cleaning the electronics, take it to a professional. Sounds like a great guitar, he's one lucky guy. I have one question for any one out there. The Tele with the maple cap neck doesn't have a Fender logo on the headstock. Was that normal? Anyone know?

I have it in the house right now, OUTSTANDING condition considering the years of neglect. Plugged it into my Marshall and, after playing with the knobs, ops check good. As far as I can tell, it is 100% original. Only question I have now is the same as posted above, there is no head decal. Is this normal or has it been worn off? If it needs one, where can I acquire a "transition" replacement? One dealer in Chicago has one for sale @ $15,000, (guitar, not the decal) so it's out of my price point, but I really want to make this guitar look like it did when it was purchased new. After that, I believe the current owner MIGHT want to part with it.
Any input is appreciated.

Don

ok don heres the deal. you can clean the hardware if you like. clean the elecrtonics, but dont mess with the finish unless you know exactly what it is.
2nd, DO NOT MAKE AN OFFER on this guitar. if you lowball the price and he says ok, you gotta live with that. let him make the price. if hes not smart enough to do some sort of research before he sells it then thats on him. if he finds out later he can only come back on himself and not you. hes a co-worker and you see him daily. it could get ugly if he finds out you lowballed him. ive bought several guitars with this method and sleep comfortably. if im out on the road on one of my seek and destroy missions, i'll make the offer and let the chips fall where they may. its always best to look for the win/win bro.
thats why i would let him offer the price. if he asks $500 then give it to him, take the gear and dont mention it to him or at work again period. he gets what he asked for it, you get the gear, win/win.
the headstock not having a name worries me a bit.
its time for you to do some serious homework bro.

Good advice Way Cool, but can any one explain the no decal. It appears it's consistent with both of the guitars, same year. Just seems odd Fender woulkd let it go without a logo decal, doesn't it? Anyone! Also I wouldn't add a logo before you find out if it's supposed to have one or not. By the way the neck on the Ebay guitar is listed as a "maple cap" neck.

Maybe you should act in the way you would like someone to act towards you... Simply not informing him in the hope he won't realise is a rotten way to proceed. So much for friendship.

Waycool...Thanx. Have NO intention of messing with the finish. At best, I'll remove the PUP plate, clean the electronics and hardware, oil the fingerboard and give the Tele a quality detailing, then re-string and set-up.
That lack of headstock decal is beginning to worry me though.

Gitr. When he brought it to work last night to have me clean it, I gave him the full run-down on this guitar, showed him the internet numbers I could find even offered him $2K for the amp and $1K for the Tele before I had even seen it. He wisely waited. Integrity is not something I take lightly, I am a federal cop afterall!

By the way, you should probably have the amp checked out as well. It probably comes on and works (sounds like he kept the whole rig in great shape) but capacitors in old electronics can dry out. The filter caps in the power supply are somewhat more prone to failing due to years of non-use than the others. Having a tech give it a look could be worthwhile.

I will, once he digs it out of the closet.
Until then, here's a link to 16 pics of this beautiful guitar, it's my facebook page. If it doesn't work, I'll do the photobucket thing. enjoy.
