I am thinking about getting an American Special Telecaster. I was wondering what you think about yours. I don't have access to play one, so I am wondering how they sound compared to the other tele's considering the Texas special pups and grease bucket circuitry.

I have played an Ash MIM tele with Tex Mex pups, so as a comparison do you think the American special is to one similar to that. Brighter or darker? More or less twangy? Jazzy? About the same?

I tend to like the more mellow sounds from the tele (comes from my acoustic guitar background I guess). From what I have seen on youtube and read online it seems to have a more midrange punch. I was thinking the grease bucket might be ideal since I can roll the highs off and not add bass (aka Fender). I play fingerstyle and mostly clean to edge of breakup bluesy sound. Not looking for a metal, heavily distorted sound in the guitar.

I know tone is subjective so just seeking opinions.

I have had one of the new american special for a few weeks now. Sounds great. There are couple of big diffs over the standard though.

First are the tex spec pickups which have a bit more output and bite (read treble). You have heard those so if you like um then you wont mind. Im finding them a bit treble-ly on the neck pickup... however that leads to the next difference...

The tone control has something called a greasebucket circuit. I dont know what it does technically, but what it does literally is allow you to back off the treble without sounding muddy like a usual tone control. So I generally have it set at around 7 for usual tele pickup sound and then turn it up to 10 if I want the tex pickup bite.

Thanks for the information. The idea of the grease bucket circuit that allows you to roll off the highs and basically leave the bass clean (from what they say) is what is appealing to me.

I like a warm sound and actually back of the tone on the MIM tele's some to cut the highs. Guess you'd call it a Jazz sound. I was just wondering if you can get that tone out the the American special even with the hotter pups by backing off the tone a little on the neck pup (as that is the one I usually play).

I guess what I am trying to find out is if the Special gives you all the same tones the MIM standard does and then some more bite if I ever wanted it?

Another thing is, I think the neck is a little wider on the special than the standard and might feel more familiar coming from an acoustic guitar background.
