Go to the store and when you play don't plug into the amps at first. That way only you can hear and FEEL what each one feels like. Just tell the guy or girl that works there you really suck and if need be ask them to play it, most will love to. You are not the first person to go into a store and not know how to play well.

+1. This is what I did when picking my Telecaster and I absolutely love that guitar.

I vote you try the MIM Telecaster Standard and the Blues Jr. The Blues Jr. has been used by professionals for recording, gets plenty loud if you want to play with others. All of Fender's guitars play great. There are no substandard models.

Best Wishes and Welcome

Hi I am new to the forums. I am 29 year old female who has been playing guitar for about a year and a half. I have been learning on a cheap acoustic which I bought around the time I was getting out of a bad relationship. I have made some progress in my playing and think it is time to get an electric guitar and amp. I want a telecaster and can spend about a thousand dollars. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks

Hi Fendergirlgirl and a big welcome to the forum. If you follow the path like everyone else here, you are likely to acquire more gear over the years. So the guitar and amp you are about to buy soon will be like training and discovery gear for you. Don't focus on finding the perfect guitar and amp, though it might happen anyway when you are shopping in your price range. Expensive gear is not always a must for a beginner.
I was older than you when I did the same thing in 2007. I never really played electric and I decided to give it a honest try. So I shopped for a few months and pulled the trigger for a 2006 MIM Strat and a Roland Cube 20 for a max of $1000.00 tax included. During that period, I must have tried almost thirty guitars. I would go to any of the guitar centers in my city and tried them unpluged because guitar necks are not all the same, and I played them for at least fifteen minutes, more if I liked the feel of the guitar. When I found a "potential buy" guitar, I'd ask the clerk if he could play it through an amp and show me what it could do when played by a pro. I bought the amp on the spot at the very end because I heard a customer play through one. Small modeling amp with a few effects and different amps sounds, plus an output for occasional headphones use.
So I wish you good luck and don't rush the process if you can. There's a lot of great stuff out there, with tons of options, you will surely find something interesting for you. This post might not be of great help, but i wanted to show you how it went for me. Keep us posted and don't forget rule number one: if you don't post pictures, the guitar doesn't exist. :)
You can see my Tele a 2008 highway one, midnight wine with jumbo frets. I love it.
Claude. 8)

I thought I'd add that sometimes you can meet a moronic clerk who cares only about his cut on the stuff you'll buy. Don't let them get you. Turn them down or bring your business elsewhere.

Hi,

I agree with the thought of going to play what you can at the store and then decide. This weekend I went to my local GC and played the american special tele w/ the stock texas specials. And I must say I was very surprised and impressed with the play quality, feel and tone. I think this tele is a great starting point......I personally would buy that tele and a Fender Champion 600 amp.....then practice and work on my tone and down the road save for a nicer amp - ie. "bassman".

good luck and keep us posted.

I think a good question is about your ultimate goals. Do you intend to play for yourself and a friend or two, want to play at open mic nights, or join a band and start a new career (or just join a band and keep the career you have)? The suggestions about trying Squiers is a good one, and as a relative newcomer to electrics could you be as acutely aware of the differences between a Squier and a MIA so that the money spent will really matter? Squiers are good guitars (many other threads about that statement) and they are competitive with some MIMs in tone and playability. With a Squier, you can also play it for a while, decide you need a different vibe and then change the pups - almost like having a different guitar - and it won't have used up your guitar allotment allowing you go to a higher end amp. Don't forget to add the cost of picks. Just kidding. But I would ask about your goals, and then try to reasonably identify the level of Tele to buy. Fender has created an amazing range to satisfy both bank accounts and playing skills. I own two Squiers (Strats) and would say they can take on most stock MIMs, especially after changing pups and pots. Squiers (Teles included) have a history of great necks, dating back to the mid-'90s Bullets and other '80s Japanese and Korean Squiers. Only Fender snobs will rag on Squiers (who mostly have never played a Squier beyond one that's never has an intonation setup and has just sat in a store getting beaten on by 12-yr-old shredder wannabes). On some forums people list their gear, so I'd look for an opinion by someone who has both Fender and Squier guitars. Remember Squiers are Fenders, not copies, not some knock-off, off-brand. They have slightly different attributes, but tastes differ - there are many touring pros who play Squiers. Going whole hog right out of the box might be a little over the top if you don't end up with the perfect guitar for your needs (instead of wants).

Hi Fendergirlgirl, you could get both a MIM Tele and a Blues Jr. amp for about $1,000. The Mexican made Teles are of great quality and sound and play great.A lot of people are still under the popular misconception that you need to take the standard pickups out of a MIM Fender and install American made ones but nothing could be further from the truth. I have an '04 Tele and it absolutely sings through my Blues Jr. The Blues Jr. is a very versatile amp that is suited for just about every genre of music except maybe metal but it could probably handle that with a suitable pedal.
You don't have to spend over $1,000 to sound great and for a 15 Watt amp the Blues Jr. can be plenty loud even for small gigs.

My five year old grandson had a crush on his pretty teacher last year. He would smile real big and say she was his "girlgirl." (girlfriend?) :D

It's easy to give a girl who loves the Stones advice on your new guitar and amp. Given what you have said, it's a really easy choice.
First, you might as well spend every penny of your $1,000 and get an American Standard Telecaster. That is about what it will cost you to have a piece of Fender Americana. The list price is a little higher.

You have to choose whether to get a maple or rosewood fretboard. Everyone is different on that subject and your father may help you decide. I like maple fret boards. I think they have a quicker feel and a brighter sound. And I like the look of a maple fret board as well. Some people like rosewood. Some people like both. It's just a matter of taste.

You actually should be able to make a decision on which type of fretboard to get without even plugging in the guitar, if doing so in a guitar shop is intimidating for you. Just check out the feel of both, the acoustic sound of both, and the look of Telecasters with both types of fretboards. Then go with what your heart tells you to do. In the end, you can't go wrong, and you will get used to which ever type of Tele fret board you end up getting.

As for color, check out the Fender site link below. But here is my recommendation for you, unless, of course, you prefer a body with a wood finish. I think a "Blizzard Pearl" Tele would be really cool for you. Add a pearl white or pearl black pick guard, and now you've got a really cool, personalized Telecaster.

If you did want to save some money, you could get a Made in Mexico Standard Telecaster for around $500. In that case, maybe a Lake Placid Blue Standard Telecaster might be cool for you. Again, add a pearl white pick guard and you will have a very cool, personalized Telecaster:

Based on your musical taste, and based on your budget, the amp is really an easy call.
Get a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. It will cost you about $750, lists for a bit more, and is the greatest sounding amp on the planet, for the money, bar none!! It will also give you that cool Keith Richards Twin Amp tweed vibe. Here's a link to the Fender site for the Blues Deluxe Reissue:

A less expensive choice would be a Blues Jr. amp, which is OK for a practice amp. But while you may save a $200, and regardless of whether you intend to use the amp solely for practice, a Blues Jr. not going you give you the high quality sound that you will get from the Blues Deluxe Reissue. You'll be stuck with that "small amp sound" that lacks some degree of depth. In addition, you will not get a spring reverb with the Junior.

Good Luck Fendergirlgirl!! I know I may have stretched your budget just a tad if you go with the American Standard Tele. But in the end, I know that if you go with these recommendations, MickJagger will give you "Satisfaction." And you'll be, "Happy."
Let us know what you get. And when you get your Tele and amp back to the ranch, don't forget to give a shout out: "OH YEAH!!!"
