Hi I am new to the forums. I am 29 year old female who has been playing guitar for about a year and a half. I have been learning on a cheap acoustic which I bought around the time I was getting out of a bad relationship. I have made some progress in my playing and think it is time to get an electric guitar and amp. I want a telecaster and can spend about a thousand dollars. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks

Is your budget $1000 just for the guitar? or both the amp and guitar?

Hi there FGG.

It is hard for someone else to tell another what guitar would be right of wrong for them, I would have a easier time buying you a pair of shoes to wear, hoping they would fit you.

So I will instead give you some guidelines and suggestions for you to try out for yourself.

The MIM standard is a good solid guitar to step up too.
Since you have been playing an acoustic I would say to try out the rosewood board model, as it will feel more like what you have been playing on.
Buy try as many as you can find, every guitar, being made from wood will feel and handle a bit differently, you need to find the one that feels best in your hands. Forget what color it is, feel is what will make or break a guitar.

The MIM standard runs around 500.00ish street price.

Amp.
More important to tone then the guitar itself is the amp, tho many fail to realize this, a cheap amp will make a custom shop guitar sound, well cheap.

While the Fender Champion 600 is a fine practice amp for under 200.00 buck, I would suggest you step up to the Fender Blues Jr.
More power and volume with a smooth tube sound that will be a amp you will be able to grow with.
Quite enough to use at home but loud enough for small gigs, church or playing with friends.
They have a street price 450-500.00ish, again, within your budget.
Another amp would be the Peavey classic 30 112.
It is a two channel 30 watt tube amp that can be had for a similar price, you just gain a drive channel and it has a footswitch and reverb.

American Special tele are good too

My friend has a MIM natural tele and it plays amazing.

Welcome to the forum, fendergirlgirl !!!

You have many choices in that price range. My best advice to is to go and play as many models as you can and see which ones feel and sound best to you.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply guys. You all know how to make a girl feel welcome. I have a thousand dollars to spend on just the guitar. I didn't mention anything about the amp because I didn't think this was the right place to do it, and I figured I would create another thread about my search for an amp in the modern amp section later. I can spend about maybe 500 to 700 on an amp.

You need to go to a music store and play the following teles; Classic Vibe Custom, Classic Vibe CV 50's, and a Classic Vibe Thinline all three branded as Squier by Fender (do a search on line to see how hot these look), $349 to $379 each (ask for 15% 0ff that). Then play a Standard tele (Mexi) by Fender $449 less 15%. If you live near a GC or Sam Ash they should have all those guitars. Play all of them and see what feels the best and sounds good to you. Then after that play a Standard USA made tele $999 to $1149 and see if the USA tele is worth that much more money to you. A great starter amp would be a new Fender Mustang $99 to $399. Way cool with presets and interactive online Fuse presets to play with and you can even add stomp boxes to experiment w'out spending money on effects.

Good luck, try them all out and you will now which one feels the best to you.

In that case I would recommend going and trying used american standards, or american specials. Depending on your hand size you could look at the american standard, with a nut width of 42.8 mm. The american special is a little more affordable but the neck is a touch wider with a nut width of 43 mm. I have the american special, they run for about $875 before taxes, I also have very tiny hands in comparison to most guys and I don't have trouble with this neck at all. The am standard can come with a rosewood neck which would be a good idea being used to acoustics, but I'm sure you could do the switch over to maple just fine. As for amps, it really all depends on what type of music you'll be playing, some amps have really nice clean tones and take pedals well, and some are good for playing dity/overdriven.

Welcome to the forum. For $1000 I would go with an American made Tele but the best way to find one you like is to try a few out and see which is best for you. Good Luck with your decision and send us a photo when you get it.

First off, welcome to the forum. Secondly, well done for choosing a Tele  My first Fender was a Strat, I have one Strat to date  However I do own six Tele's, that should tell you eveything. I have MIM, MIA, and CIJ Fender guitars. I wouldn't part with any of them, each has her own magic. Try as many guitars as you can, you'll know the right one when you feel/hear/see it. Good luck, and remember the pix

I have a couple of MIM and a couple of AmStd and either choice would be good. As others say, try before you buy. They can have subtle differences even if they're supposed to be the exact same model.

Amp: for one, you might decide tube or solid state. You can get a lot more raw watts for $700 in a solid state amp though tube amps can sound loud enough. I have a Champ SCXD that's more than enough for home (or mic'ing) but would be underpowered in most band situations. I have an old Super 210 (65W, 2 X 10) that's more than loud enough for any gig I'd play that I got for around $550 used, if used is an option with you.

I think Carvin and Peavey have tube amps in your range as well as solid. The key to beating the amp to death is only that your choice of guitar should be heard ideally through your choice of amp. Also try to get to the store (assuming you're buying new) when it will be quiet -- at my local Guitar Center, Monday and Tuesday mornings are usually a good choice. That way, you're not competing against 14 year old wanna be rockers. You'll want to hear how your choices respond at different volumes, with soft picking, etc.

Thanks again for the nice welcome and replies. I guess most of you are saying that I just need to go try things out but for a newbie like me it is all a little intimidating because there are so many choices. Also, my guitar skills are not that great and I am a bit intimidated trying the gear out in public. As far as the music I like, I like Chicago blues alot and Rock and Roll like the Rolling Stones which my dad always played at home. Also, what's the difference between a tube amp and solid state?

Go to the store and when you play don't plug into the amps at first. That way only you can hear and FEEL what each one feels like. Just tell the guy or girl that works there you really suck and if need be ask them to play it, most will love to. You are not the first person to go into a store and not know how to play well. I hope this encourages you! Another great discussion forum for teles is http://www.tdpri.com

I think you are getting some good advice here. Most importantly get that guitar in your hands and play it, play several different ones. You will most likely find a guitar that wants to go home with you. As far as amps go and the kind of music you say you like, be sure and try out some tube amps. I find my Tele's like the Fender Blues Jr., and Peavey Classic 30 the best. Both MIM Teles and MIA Teles are great. Good luck with the search. :?

... Also, what's the difference between a tube amp and solid state?

Hard to explain in short, but tubes (valves) tend to amplify in a smooth curve, resembling a sine wave. This is more "musical" than the tendency of solid state devices to produce a square wave (very raspy sounding). Also, tubes tend to produce 3rd order, 5th order, etc. harmonics and these are also heard as being musical; solid state naturally tends to produce 2nd, 4th, etc. harmonics. These sound harsh. So especially early solid state amps tended to sound very cold and harsh.

However, they can produce a lot more power (watts out) than tubes for a lot less cost and power consumption. They're also lighter, which could be a consideration if you have to carry it.

Tubes are the sound of vintage blues (you mention Chicago blues -- drive a tube amp very hard into overload and you'll hear what I'm saying) and classic rock. Solid state became the sound of the 80s because of the cost and weight issue, so you could argue that at least the genesis of metal distortion was the non-musical way solid state overdrives.

But the picture blurs today with digital modeling and much better solid state amps. You can find solid state amps that do a decent job of sounding like classic tube amps. On a stage in a loud bar, probably more than close enough. With a few models built in, you could save yourself carrying a lot of pedals or amps.

Then there are hybrids -- these usually include a tube pre-amp (warms up the sound and provides some classic tube overdrive) connected to a solid state power amp. You have virtually all the weight and high power advantages of solid with the pre-amp tube adding back some of the warmth and depth solid state lacks. I'd consider at least one hybrid in your search to see if that works for you.

There's a final alternative -- I use a tube pre-amp intended for home audio in the effects loop of my Bassman 210/250. That puts a tube after the Bassman's solid state pre and before the power amp, in effect a home made hybrid. In a (very) small sample of three friends, where I played three different patterns, all agreed that the sound was more pleasing with the tube pre on than off.

There are also tube stomp boxes you can use (guitar to that, and that into the amp). I've tried those but my opinion is that the effects were minimal. In a quite room with soft jazz, I could detect what the pedal was doing but that's about it. That's because unlike my "home hybrid," the effects of your tube box are going through both the solid state pre and power amps and being seriously diluted.
