Fender identifies their guitars made in the American factory by stating as such....

ie: American Standard, American Special, American Reissue.

If it doesn't say that, then its made in the Mexican plant or elsewhere.

I think all of the Thinline Reissues are made in the Mexican plant. You would need to purchase a vintage Tele Thinline to get one that is American made. Get ready to lay down a couple of grand and be ready to know what you are looking at to ensure someone isn't scamming you.

IMHO - I've played american and mexican Teles in the shops and I don't see a lot of difference in quality.

There's nothing wrong with a mexican tele that a good professional set-up can't cure.

The Thinline Reissues are made in Mexico and Japan.

However, Fender produced a limited-edition run of USA-made Thinlines in 2005. These guitars were Factory Special Runs (FSR) crafted at the Fender Custom Shop.

I think there is going to be a FSR Thinline this year to commemorate the 60th anniversary. At 500 units.... will probably come with a price tag to match. If I wasn't so tight with my cash.... I might buy the tele made with cedar from at 19th c. bridge or the wood from the Indiana barn.

I agree with the above post, price would be a good indication of where its made. American made Fenders are more money than Mexican made guitars.

Christopher W. Fleming had built a thinline '50s blackguard reissue a couple of years ago, though thinline Telecasters weren't available until Roger Roßmeisl came up with this idea in 1968.

So what makes it a 50's...... Bridge, neck profile and pups? Other than the headstock logo and custom color.... looks just like a '69 Thinline RI.

Not sure I'd personally call it a 50's RI.... its just a custom Tele. To me a reissue is faithful to a specific time and model with minor modifications to reflect advances in technology/manufacturing/playability.

From the Fender Custom Shop Website:

"Originally conceived as a model that could’ve been made during the halcyon days of the early ’50s (we didn’t begin building thinline guitars until 1968), Custom Shop Senior Master Builder Chris Fleming recently designed the Custom Telecaster Thinline guitar with many of the same features and materials found in early Nocaster® guitars. The one major difference is its thinline, nitrocellulose-finished ash body, complete with f-hole. Additional features include a straight-grain, lightly tinted one-piece maple neck, Chris Fleming custom-wound pickups and vintage bridge. A truly distinctive Fender guitar.

This guitar has been given our “New Old Stock” (NOS) treatment—built (from original tooling) as if bought new in its respective model year and just found today."

Marketing hype from the custom shop.

I think sometimes its best not to try to categorize something and just call it what it is .... a custom tele. But the marketing team needs to give it name..... for whatever reason.

phansford, thanks for the great UTube link. Did you notice that they talk about a new brass vintage type 3 saddle bridge that will allow for individual string intonation? I would love to get my hands on one of those (or at least see one close up). Maybe they will be available next year.
