Hello form a long time Strat player but first time poster on the Tele forums.

I have always steered away from Teles. There is something about their "wood plank" type body and weird headstock that has never attracted me to them (visually).

But I have recently fallen in love with the Tele tone, not for country but for blues and rock. I tried a few and it's that beautiful woody, throaty, gargling, almost 3D tone that I have realised to have craved for so long and never obtained with a Strat.

I still find the Tele to be a bit awkward (like for example the way the volume knob sits so close to the pickup selector when the bridge pickup is engaged) but I am willing to overcome these niggles in favour for great tone.

So I am seriously considering buying one - currently debating between an Amerian Deluxe (love the bound bodies), a 52 Reissue and a Mexican Road Worn. I am not after period correct features and all I care about is the throaty tone and a comfortable neck (for bends and quick, non sticky sliding up and down). A dark maple (almost amber) fretboards would be a preference but not essential.

My budget is £800 ($1300) and I would be equally happy with a used or brand new instrument.

I play through a Marshall Vintage Modern and my influences are Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Audioslave, Black Crowes, Black Stone Cherry, Chili Peppers, Leeny Kravitz - that sort of thing.

Any advice?
Thanks in advance

I'd go 52 reissue, Am Deluxe, Road Worn in that order. I just feel that the 52 reissue is THE Tele to have. The DLX is a super super guitar as well. Ideally, you'll want to try each of them ahead of time and see which one feels better. But for my money, and I am a lover of ALL Telecasters, I'd go with the 52.

The American Standard is in that range for brand new, and it will have all the tone you could want. Doesn't have the bound body though, and I know what you're talking about. The bound body on the aged cherry burst tele with that pearloid pick guard is just... I am drooling just thinking about it.

Hi tremolo arm,

I was the same way, Strat fan and didn't care about a Tele. When I finally gave the Tele serious consideration, I chose an '09 Am Std, and I am thrilled with it, classic Tele flavor/tone, very nice. The Tele isn't as comfortable as a Strat, but the Tele tone is great and bends are better on the Tele. I no longer consider the Tele as second rate, but as a big brother to the Strat, the Tele did come first after all. Given your three choices, I agree with BlackCatBone, but I'd put an Am Std ahead of the RW, especially considering the price. :)

I always prefered a Strat over the Tele, until I played one. I have an Am. Deluxe Tele and it has the body contour like the Strat so to me its the best of both worlds. Comfortable, and you can do volume swells because of the knob position. If you want to hear some of the effects you can get listen to a Roy Buchanan song. Sweet Dreams and After Hours are two good examples. Albert Collins was another great Tele player, any of his songs are good too.

Hi tremelo arm

I am the opposite to you a Tele man through and through, never really fancied a strat until the American Special series came out last year so I picked up a Candy Apple Red Strat in October and i'm very pleased with it (tele's are still my number one!!!) I also have a '09 Am deluxe tele like JPD's photo. I would consider either the Am Special Tele or Am Standard Tele but if you can stretch the your budget the Deluxe tele's are very nice.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply guys

In terms of material, which body / fretboard combination would give the fuller / throatier tone? I am set on ash body / maple fretboard, but I am wandering if that might not sound too thin (which a Strat often does - especially in the bridge position).

Also, I noticed that the Am Deluxes from 2006 and before do not have locking tuners and the same SCN pickups as the new ones. What other differences are there between new and older Deluxes? Do the older ones have the high gloss, compounded fretboard for example?

Thanks

An alder body would definitely give you a tone that sounds more full, and a rosewood fret board would make it darker sounding. On my Mia special, its alder with a maple fret board and it sounds pretty classic. I would personally prefer a rosewood fret board but thats just the preference between a bright and dark sound.

As for the older am dlx I'm sure you could put locking tuners on it with no problem. The pickups on them aren't the n3's they have now they were scn or Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ pickups which were pretty good. Although the 2006 model did not have the s1 switch that the newer ones were known for. So your not getting the same features with the older dlx's that's why I would suggest looking at newer am standards, they'll have everything you want for your price range.

Cheers!

If you like the switching options of the Strat, you may want to try the Nashville or Baja Tele's.
I like the inbetween sounds on the Nashville. The Baja sounds good in every in phase position. Though the neck and bridge in parallel of the Baja is to die for.

You can reverse the plate on the controls. Then you can put volume knob on top, tone middle, switch of course would be on the bottom. This frees space around the volume knob and gets the switch out of the way.

For the amp and style you play, the Hot Rod 52 with its mini-humbucker would be the perfect choice for you.
