My Father left me his Telecaster and I've always thought it was a 73 because of the serial number: 406407 on the "neck plate". But it has a black pick guard. I recently read where on the the ones from the 50's had black pick guards. I do know he bought it in Nashville in 1974. Could it be a 50's body with a neck from the 70's? Thanks! Sloan

I believe your interpreting too much from the statement about 50's guitars.

They made Tele's with black guards in the 70's too. Somebody could have put a black guard on it at some point.
The fact that 50's guitars had black pickguards doesn't mean that all teles with black guards have 50's bodies.

Anything is possible but the most likely bet is that you father swapped the original white pickguard for a black one at some point along the way. It could be he cracked the original white one or just liked the looks of the black one.

The original '50s Broadcasters/"Nocasters"/Telecasters had 1-ply bakelite black pickguards; Fender switched to single ply white pickguards circa 1956/57, and switched again to 3-ply white/black/white pickguards in the early 1960s.

I think Fender transitioned from 3-ply white pickguards to 3-ply black/white/black pickguards on all models circa mid/late 1975 or early 1976. Also, for a period of time (say 1977 well into 1980) the only replacement pickguards Fender sold were the 3-ply black ones for all models.

Anything's possible, but my guess is a replacement black guard was added.
