Hi all...

I have just brought myself a 72 deluxe and on the whole I am really loving it. One thing though I am getting a quite annoying humming which stops when I hold the strings.

I have read a few bits about this on old posts from other forums and most suggestions seem to point to earthing and shielding suggestions, IE better shielding on the wire from the 3 way switch, and earthing to one point on the outlet jack.

I have just been to see my local guitar tech who says that as long as the earths are ok then shielding would not help.

I dont mine spending a few quid if I have a good chance of sorting things out, but not if its a long shot on fixing the problem.

As I am quite a new player and have no tech knowledge at all, any opinions from you guys would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance :)

Here's what to try.....Sit farther away or face another way from the amplifier. Also, computer monitors and some lights can cause interference like this. You may have a poor ground connection in your guitar.....or the outlet you plug the amp in to is not grounded properly, or another device on the same circuit as the outlet is causing it.
It never hurts to shield a guitar......all guitars were shielded with metal plates and stuff years ago......now you get a spec of foil tape under the pickguard! Single coils will almost always make some sort of noise, that's just the nature of the beast. I have noticed that I get all kinds of hums, and scratchy sounds in the winter....and I'm thinking it is static electricity build up.

Thanks for your reply.... I am playing in a duo, we use vox tonelabs straight into a PA, my mate has the same set up but uses a Les Paul. so we were set up and rehearsing (the first time with the 72') and when we were not playing I had the hummmmm
Also the 72' is not single coil it has two humbuckers (which is why I thought I should not get the hum)

I changed my lead, still the same hummmm, I switched to his gear still got the hummmmm

I am just hoping that I can sort it and I don't just have to keep turning it down inbetween songs, because that will be a pain in the $@!.
