Raise the string height.
Thicker strings need more room to move.

Then you need to either check the relief on the neck, I'd be going to .014" with .011" strings.
Action at around 5/64's at the 12th fret, not the 17th.

If that doesn't work you need to level the frets. Perfectly normal on new necks.

i had about the same type of problem , it turned out to be a neck tilt and a couple of bad frets on my new neck . try talking to your local guitar tech if possible. good luck!

Too much relief will cause your upper frets to buzz. Try a setup with a straighter neck, and compensate by raising the string height. :) If your strings are only buzzing on the 12th fret, the 12th may be low, or the 13th fret is too high. A good spot-level, recrown and polish would fix high fret(s).

Steve, I politely ask why you think that too much relief causes upper fret buzz?
Unless of course you meant that too little relief (or back bow) will cause the upper frets to buzz when your playing on lower frets . That is exactly right.
When you adjust relief, the only real physical change on the guitar is at the headstock end. Say your guitar was laid flat on the table. When you undo the truss adjuster, all that really happens is the headstock would rise up. It's not that it causes a dip in the middle of the neck. It just looks that way because of the increased bow. You can measure that and see for yourself, though the increase is slight in most normal measurements. So much so that we measure it with feeler gauges on the board.
The other end (upper register/frets) is a fixed position in relation to the bridge, because it's bolted to the neck.

Here's why too much relief cause the higher frets to buzz......
The truss mod is meant to add relief, but really only affects the first half of the fretboard, so the lower frets (about 1 -7) won't buzz. You then set string height to allow the higher frets to still have good action, but not buzz, due to the fact that most fretboards level out and don't relieve as they get closer to the body joint. SO, if you have too much relief, you lower the strings to make the lower frets have a good action, but the higher frets will buzz because there is no longer sufficient clearance to prevent them buzzing since they dont have anywhere near the relief the lower portion of the board does. Trust me, or better yet, try a setup like this and see :D Not to mention, with a ton of relief, you are essentially pressing the strings into a valley when fretting, and the upper frets, the fretted string will smack the uphill side of the valley going towards the bridge.

But Steve there is no uphill section on the upper frets, reason being the upper fret end of the neck hasn't moved. The other thing is that the truss rod does not add bow, tightening the rod relieves bow forcing the neck straight. I've always understood it to be the string tension adds bow, the trussrod will counteract that by tightening up and forcing the neck to its straightest point.

Yep though, having excessive relief will cause uneccessarily high action. If you lower the saddles to counteract that without sorting the real problem, you'll get a load of problems.

Cheers for your time mate. Oh and welcome to the forums. :D
