i have a mim tele standard. it has a seymore duncan vintage stack at the neck and a hot rails in the bridge. hot rails makes it sound loud and less twangy so im thinking i should put the mim original pickup back in the bridge. any comments on this? im looking for ways to get a twangy sound.

also wondering if there was a cheaper fender that has a good twang...such as esquire or highway one?

basically i want a twangy fender but i dont know what to do. fix up this mim or buy something else. i dont really play lead as i am mostly rhythm/singer in my group. thanks alot guys.

Find a good used American Standard Tele - - it will twang like the best of 'em.

Perhaps adding the vintage 3 saddle bridge will give you what you need (if you don't have one).

Kinman Broadcaster pickups. They'll give you the twang you want. Paisley uses them in several of his guitars and they deliver.

I have a `07 Am. Deluxe Tele that comes with noiseless pups and its as twangy as you could want. If your local music store has a new one ask to play it and see if you like the sound of them.

I'd say that taking out the humbuckers and putting single coils (original or otherwise) will probably give you some twang. BCB suggested a nice set in the Kinmans, and I personally like Texas Specials in Tele's, twangy without being to harsh on the high end.

Drop the Hot Rails, not a twangy pickup. Maybe try a Vintage Stack bridge or a Hot Stack bridge pickups, both Seymour Duncan products. What pots do you have 250 or 500k? That may make a difference if you go back to the true single coil pickup. With a little research I'm sure you'll find your "twang". Good luck!

you already have the cheapest of the 3.
yank those pickup and try different ones. i use 11's on mine but string gauge also plays a role in your tone as well.

I have an '04 MIM Tele with stock pickups and she has all the treble bite and twang of an MIA Tele-certainly no need to change the pups in this puppy. As a matter of fact I have to roll off the tone on the bridge pup most of the time because the treble bite is a bit too much for me.

First of all drop the buckers as suggested before.

Fresh light strings. I'd suggest 9s or 10s. And again, keep them fresh, I'd change them once a week to keep max twang.

Add to that a clean-ish Fender Blackface or Silverface amp if possible.

Different pickups will do it, you just don't want a humbucker or some super-hot single coil pickup. Keep the output in the "vintage" range. Just be aware that different materials and winding techniques will give you different tastes of twang. The Duncan Broadcaster I had was fuller sounding, with more compressed highs, but still very cutting. The original bridge pickup in my Classic Series 60's Tele doesn't have as much mids or output, but the highs and more in your face and the note separation is more in evidence than with the Duncan (and more twangy). Think about Don Rich, Steve Cropper.

Finally, but the most important, technique. Use you index and middle fingers to pull the strings.

Just recieved the new catolog from MF. Set of Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pickups for $104.95. Probably some twangy goodness there! All you'll need with that is a good Princeton, Deluxe or a Twin with a couple of JBL D120's and look out. TWANGGGGGGG!!

I own several teles and have found that bridges with the three brass saddles, standard output single coil pickups, and fresh strings make for the most twang. After that, you have to learn to pluck the strings with your middle and fourth finger while playing to really bring the twang out.

My American Standard tele with the six steel saddles has the least amount of twang in any of my teles.
