Hi

I've been thinking about getting a Tele and was going to go for something early 70s. I was thinking it would have good tone, hold its value, and I wouldn't have to be too concerned about wrapping it in cotton wool as it would already have a few dings.

But I have heard someone say that new Teles are better and that the only reason to buy old is for nostalgia.

I'd be grateful for any informed comments/opinions

Thanks

I'm not qualified to answer your question (since I don't own a '70's Tele), but I'll still add my $.02. I've got a 2005 MIA and have played many others from around this time and I gotta say that the necks on the new Teles are great. I like the feel of the high gloss. I'm gassing for a new one. While I'm at it, I'd also like a '70's-era Tele....

I'd always go vintage, but you have to play both and see which one feels and sounds best to you.

I have an `07 Am. Deluxe Tele and love it. Vintage Teles and/or re-issues are in another category and if that`s what your looking for that`s fine. You have to play them to see what feels better to you.

Unfortunately, where I am it isn't possible to find somewhere to go to do straightforward comparrisons, and early 70's Teles don't come along very often. Interested to know any opinions that people might have formed.

I think someone has said that new Teles are in a different league. I wonder if by that they think they are better.

Perhaps someone might be knowleadgeable enough to offer some pro's and con's

All the best and thanks for your replies.

Most people agree that old acoustics sound better as the wood ages and produces a better tone, I wonder if the same can be said for electrics?

Why? That makes no sense.

A matter of opinion and it makes sense to me, I prefer a vintage instrument. You may disagree and that is perfectly fine. To each his own.

I wonder that too... I mean the wood does age, but how much would that contribute to the sound of a solid body electric guitar?

The only thing I have that's vintage is my amp (and its one of the best sounding i've ever heard) but is it different for amps? then again, this amp was made back in the good 'ole days, all american parts, put together by hand, built like a tank (and as heavy as one too)

I love the direction fender is going now. All of their stuff thats been coming into the shop surprises me with their quality and craftsmanship. It doesn't amaze me that the US teles are getting such great reviews. 8)

I've read teles from the late 60s to the early 80s are the CBS teles and that they are not as good as the new fender guitars today. Maybe 50s and early 60s would be better?

I had a '67 Tele and I've yet to find another Tele that had such a great feeling neck...and I've tried and played many!

I own several 70's through 80's CBS Fenders, and all are of the highest quality.....so I have not found the "poor quality" myths about these to be true. I will say this.....if you buy a 1970's tele, it will either 1: be in great shape, never played much so the frets are good, or 2: be played extensively, and the frets may be worn down so low it might not play as well as a newer model would. If it has been refretted, no worries. Vintage guitars are great...sometimes......just cause it's old don't mean it's gold! If you like the nostalgia of the older Fenders, go for it.....they do feel different too. But if you want a great playing guitar, I think the guitars made today are high quality, and consistently well made. A new Tele will play easier, and may not have certain issues older guitars can have. Older guitars, sometimes the wood "takes a set" meaning however the guitar was set up for most of it's life is how it will be forever.....which can be great if it was maintained, and can be Hell if it wasn't ! A new tele can sound just as good as an old one, but I think you may find the newer guitars will play easier. But if you can swing the cash, a 1970's Tele will only increase in value as time goes by. You may also find that you start to make a vintage guitar your "precious"....and you may not gig with it or take it places.......LOL :D

Cool!!! I've always wondered about the CBS Fenders. But really wasnt sure about them, and I do agree that a new Fender would be better than an old one.
