Post subject: Why is the AVRI 62 tele custom a custom?

i am just wondering why on the head stock it says "Custom telecaster"

is it a custom shop guitar or something?

Back in that era of say 1960 through about 1970 (maybe 1971) Fender offered double bound bodies on Telecasters (i.e. they have binding around the front side and the back side of the body); Fender called these "Custom Telecasters". The American Vintage '62 Tele has the double binding and is therefore technically a "Custom Telecaster". That does not mean it is made by the Custom Shop; it is made in the regular production line (although the Custom Shop has from time to time made a Time Machine series 1960 Custom Telecaster but it is not a current model).

That is opposed to a "Telecaster Custom" which came out in 1972 (and ran until about 1981 or 1982) and had a humbucker in the neck position, a large pickguard with Les Paul-style controls (toggle switch on upper bought, individual volumes and tones for each pickup).
