When the Strat is arguably the more versatile and iconic guitar, why does everyone pay more for a Telecaster? This seems to include the low end Squier stuff right up to Custom Shop.

From everything I've seen, as far as I can see, a standard strat and a standard tele are the same price retail. And that was the case for just about all levels of Strats and Teles, with only a few exceptions I saw.

If your talking about used - I think it is supply and demand. In my part of the country finding a used tele is dang hard, while every pawn shop has a few strat's on the wall.

These are price quotes from Musician's Friend.

Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster Electric Guitar $1499.99
Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar $1549.99
Fender American Deluxe Telecaster Electric Guitar $1699.99

I noticed this because I am looking at getting a matching set of 2011 Fender American Deluxe Telecaster/Stratocaster in Tungsten.

If you go directly to Fender's website both the American Deluxe Strat and Tele are priced the same at $1,999.00.

Evidently Musician's Friend and a couple of other retailers I checked must be seeing a demand for the American Deluxe Tele in order to charge a premium for it over the American Deluxe Strat.

There is always that, I wasn't going to be the first to say it though ;)

Could it be that retailers sell more Strats so order more of them and so get a better discount on them?

Or because they sell more of them, they are willing to make a lower margin on them?

My suggestion would be to speak to the retailer and call them on it - the RRP is the same so why are they charging different amounts.

And if you're potentially buying a Strat and a Tele from them, then you should certainly negotiate a nice discount for yourself on them!!

I noticed that with the 2010 American Deluxe Tele/Strat prices at Guitar Center. At first I thought it was an American Deluxe Ash Tele and that was why it was more expensive, but it was the alder model. The other models were priced the same.

I wonder if it is a supply and demand issue? 2010 American Deluxe Fenders have been hard to find most of the year. Then the Strats started appearing but I didn't see a Tele until about a month ago. Maybe the Tele production run was a small one and certain retailers are taking advantage of it.

I was looking at an Amer. Deluxe Tele the other day and was told by the manager that they had a hell of a time getting the one they had. I certainly suspect it is a supply issue but money talks and it is worth a discussion, as previously suggested.
I have seen two if them in my local area in the last two weeks so they are out there.

My favorite local Guitar Center has had one 2010 American Deluxe Tele. I wanted to play it to compare it with my '09 Deluxe but it had S-1 problems and it had to be sent back. Oh well.

I'm a big fan of the 2010 American Deluxe Strats but there's no way I would pay more for one of the Teles. That's just wrong and it goes against Fender tradition.

The standard USA and Mexican Tele's are the same price as their Stratocaster counterparts. What models of each were you comparing?

The law of supply and demand.

If the supply is bigger then the demand, prices will drop to get the surplus sold.

Good Teles are hard to find on CL and other sources! Search for one and then search for a Strat. Strats are numerous to be found!
