Super kid,

You are welcome. I changed out my strings last weekend and my tuning problems seem to have disappeared. I'll save the intonation for a later day. Instead I'll just play. :D

By the way, I'm only 64 going on 13 :D I started playing when I was your age and then life got too busy. (Did play in a band briefly in high school and college) Started again 5 years ago and in the new wonderful age of modeling amps and loopers I am a one man band. Keep at it and it will be a friend for life.

If you have never had the guitar setup since you bought it, take to your local guitar tech and have it done. It will be the best $40 to $50 you have spent since buying the guitar. The situation you are describing is an intonation issue, randomly changing string sizes may reduce the problem, but it will still be there without a proper setup. There is no reason your guitar should be in tune with itself along the entire fret board.

Fender does not do a complete setup when they build the guitar. It would be practically impossible since they ship guitars around the world and the varying climate conditions (and shipping) would negate the initial adjustments made at the factory.

I've been playing a lot of new guitars the last two weeks at shops and had two with the exact same problem you describe. I'm guessing they aren't being properly setup at the factory. Good luck.
Also, if you're 12 you should appreciate this video:

Watch the above mentioned video a few times. Then get yourself a phillips screwdriver ANDa tuner. Tune each string and compare the tuner indication (string open) to the reading given at the 12th fret. Check this comparison several times, and adjust the affected string saddle to get the reading to match. It's not hard to do, but if you've never done it before, it might take you a little while. Be patient. Good luck...you can do it!

If any of you have an iPod touch gen4 (with the microphone built in) there is an awesome app called Guitar Toolkit that has a great tuner. I have several small Korg tuners that I have used for years, but this app kicks their butt! Much easier to read and matches their results perfectly. It also has other features like a metronome and great chord finder. I use it all the time. Think it was free or a few dollars. If you have the latest Touch - this is a no brainer.
