Hi guys,

Wanted to pick the combined brain cells of you guys:

I'm looking at an American Special Telecaster, but none of the shops near me have them in so I'd either have to special order one, or buy one online.

So before I did that I just wanted to ask about the Texas Special Telecaster pickups. How do they compare to other Tele pickups (the ones I have most experience with are those in an American Series Tele as I owned one for a couple of years). I'm not a fan of the Strat Texas Specials, so I wanted to get some peoples' opinions on the Tele ones.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the American Special and the Mex Standard, the main thing about these pickups is that they are pretty powerful. The bridge has a lot of treble and twang, pretty classic tele. The middle position takes some edge of the bridges twang and adds the bassy neck for a nice balanced tone. The neck is pretty jazzy and smooth, nice with slower finger picking stuff. The best part about it in my opinion (many people disagree with me) is the greasebucket tone circuits, it really balances the tone when it's all the way up so it doesn't get muddy like a mex standard.

If you wanna hear one I would recommend looking on youtube.

This video does a nice job of showcasing the versatility and tone of the instrument.

Thanks, I did watch that video, but all that tells me is what that guitar sounds like in isolation through that particular amp and through the soundcard on my laptop and either my very crappy speakers or my half-decent headphones...

I am leaning towards pulling the trigger on an American Special Tele though as the rest of the spec does it for me and it's easy enough to swap out the pickups if I don't like them. Though if that clip IS true to what I'd hear in person then I don't see that being an issue.

Yeah, they demo all their gear through a fender DRRi, which is a pretty solid clean tone. Swapping the pickups isn't a huge job, it's whatever sounds best to you mate. Good luck!

I have just brought one of the new American Special Teles. The texas specials sound more mid/treble that the standard fender pickups I think and the output level is quite a bit higher so they get more crunch. I'm not sure if I like the extra treble on the neck pickup, but its growing on me.

However I LOVE the greasebucket tone control. You can almost turn it all the way down and still not make the sound to muddy. When playing the neck pickup I turn the tone knob down about 20% and it takes the treble off nicely.

The Texas Specials are a little warmer and hotter than the Vintage Original Tele pickups. But they still have plenty of bite and huge tone.

I think that PGS YouTube video totally does that guitar justice.

Just buy the guitar already. It'll sound great! :D
