Well long story short, I saw an online classified which particularly caught my eye. It was advertised under "Fender special telecaster deluxe, Tex-mex model". I've not been able to clarify what the exact model is, but I'm definitely not a master at distinguishing real and fake, but I'm pretty sure there's something quite odd about this Telecaster.
The seller seems nice enough and trustworthy, but I really just can't put my finger on this one. There's definitely something odd, but as I said, I'm not too experienced with identifying fakes so I'd really like to consult Fender Forums before I drive down to collect it tomorrow.

So is it safe or does it look like a fake?

Happy New Year!

Looks like a legit mid-90s MIM Tele Special. These were the forerunners of the current MIM "Deluxe" models and were only made for about 2 years (either 1996/97 or 1997/98) - tinted neck, vintage tuners, neck humbucker, and the 6-saddle vintage bridge. There was a corresponding Strat model that had a bridge humbucker.

If you can get the serial number the Fender should be able to provide more details; you can either email or call Consumer Relations.

Looks real to me - - I had a '95 CAR one that I wish I had kept.

Loved the neck, plus the guitar itself was so light but resonant. The 5-position selector is a great addition. It played and sounded like a vintage Tele. 8)

If it's what it appears to be a MIM Tex-Mex Tele from the mid nineties it's probably one of the best playing guitars you'll ever lay hands on. I've got one of these in Black and White that looks like the same guitar. Mine has the five way switch and same pickup configuration. The SN will tell all.
