Hi.. I am trying to install a set of two-wire noiseless vintage pickups to my American Tele Deluxe that has a S-1 button and SCN pickups in it. The tone from the SCN pickups does not work for me.

The issue I have is I don't know how to install the new vintage pickups. The SCN pickups have 3 wires and the new Noiseless vintage ones only have two wires.

Current setup:
The current SCN pickups have 3 wires with the below connections

Neck SCN Pickup wiring:
Black: From pickup to volume
White: From pickup to 3 way switch
Green: From pickup to tone. (Please note the tone knob has two solderings on the back of it. One is a group of Green wires and the other is a group of black wires.)

Bridge SCN Pickup wiring:
Black: From pickup to screw in body. Screw has two outgoing wires. 1 wire goes to the bridge and the other goes to the tone knob
Yellow: From pickup to 3 way switch (different connetion than white wire from the neck pickup above)
Green: From pickup to tone knob. This green wire is soldered to the same location as the necks green wire

How do I wire the each of the new pickups that have only one yellow and one black wire? Do I have to live without the s-1 switch with these new pick ups?
Is there a way to make a third connection to the new pickups so I can use the S-1 capability?

thx

Wiring diagrams are available here:

Yup, there's more than one. Good luck.

Hi,
Thx for the link. However, it does not provide the answer. I know the wiring of my guitar and how the pickups are to be wired to without the S-1 enabled. However, I do no know how to install this 2-wire pickup and have the S-1 active.

Can you point me to a more specific link?

thx a bunch

Hi south4t,

The extra wire on your existing pickups (green wire) is just an extra ground that you won't have on the new pickups (no problem). So, just hook up the new two wire pickups in the same place as the existing pickups other two wires, ignoring where the extra green wire was for the existing pickups. Find your wiring diagram here, there are several to choose from, look for your part number.

Edit:

Looks like Andybighair has answered this same question here. He says the same thing.

Just wire the new pickups wires to the same place as the old ones were wired, disregard the green wire on the existing pickups, just cut the green wires at the back of the pot. You are basically swapping the wires from the existing pickups, for the wires on the new pickups, with the new pickups connected to the same place as the existing pickups wires are now, you won't have to make any other wiring changes. Change one pickup at a time, one wire at a time, making sure to keep the polarity correct. Remove one existing pickup from the pick guard and move aside, leave wires connected. Put one new pickup in it's place in the pick guard, where the existing pickup was removed. Then unsolder the positive wire of the removed pickup from where it connects in the circuit, do not solder at the pickup end of the wire, use the other end, keeping the wires attached to the pickups. Then solder the positive wire of the new pickup to the same place that you just removed the existing pickup's positive wire. Repeat for the negative wire on this same pickup, then do the same for the other two pickups. Maybe take some before and after closeup pictures of the wiring, and you could post them to show us what you have done. :)

OK guys. I finally go around to this. I installed it and it worked per your directions. Thx for the help.

Now i have a new issue.
For some reason, when I turn the volume knob it does not increase or decrease volume as it should. It sputters in at out at low volume settings. I was real carefull installing it so I am wondering how I screwed up.
Is there an adjustment I need to make? Any suggestions?

thx

Sounds like a bad solder connection.

If it does this with your switch in both the 1 and 3 positions, it is unlikely that the problem is the pick-up wiring, as both pick-ups are doing the same thing independently. The focus then has to be on the pots. It is possible that your soldering created a "dry solder" joint and your solder joints needs to be reheated. Otherwise, it is possible that too much heat has caused a pot malfunction.
