Do you like the look of Bound or Unbound Telecasters?

A Bound guitar has the edges (top and/or bottom) of the body with an inlaid material - sometimes white, sometimes black and sometimes black and white, or any other pattern that someone is willing to make.

Here are 2 examples from Fender:

Bound - an American Deluxe Telecaster®

Image

Unbound - a G.E. Smith Telecaster®

well binding looks nice for that modern look,
but un-binded guitars look more vintage-y :D

CRAP! I mean to vote unbound, but hit bound by accident. I like unbound as bound reminds me a bit of a Les Paul.

I wasn't planning on voting, so I'll vote unbound in your proxy. :)

man...how can you chose? Csapo posted a pic of his blue bound tele and I love that thing. But there is also something about a nice aged sunburst unbound that screams to be played.

Each is a work of art. The first time I saw my '72 Thinline RI, I just couldnt stop lookin at it. And when I played it, the sale was already in the bag.

I can totally see how people have a few dozen of these things.

The OP very astutely qualified his poll question to: Telecasters.

To me, the Telecaster was one of the first, if not the first, commercially successful solid-body electric guitar.

A great deal of that success was in it's minimalism !

The Telecaster is a product of the post-war Industrial age it was born in. It is one of the first industrial guitars not requiring the skill or the man-hours of a Luthier to produce. It really is a component guitar with it's bolt-on neck, bridge and thru-body string design.

Bit of Chicken & Egg here as the minimalist purity of design also allowed for a low price-point, both of which appealed to the Market.

The only purpose of binding on a true solid-body is cosmetic. Binding's true function was/is to hide/protect the seam between wood joints and of course a pure solid-body doesn't have any.

Both my Teles are not bound, and don't need it. Personally, I don't think binding would even improve their aesthetic.

Now, a carved top such as my Heritage H-535 needs a binding to protect the joint between the body and the carved top, it is truly functional. An added bonus is that it also looks good on this type of guitar.

I prefer traditional Telecasters. Those with carved or figured tops such as the Select Series, or those coming out of Japan, IMHO, are trying to improve an already 'pure' design.

This was necessary to distinguish them for Market purposes. Also, binding was traditionally perceived as a 'deluxe' feature distinguishing more expensive instruments from less expensive ones. It provides a means to put a much higher price tag on the instrument while adding very little actual cost.

Also, IMHO, the Thinline Telecasters should have been altered somewhat from a Telecaster and named something else, ie. the Vibrocaster or some such. I understand Fender's reasoning to piggy-back on an already successful design, again a Marketing decision, because it's difficult to drive a new design to market acceptance. But, while great guitars, to me, they just aren't really Telecasters.

Anyway, that's my $0.02... which I accept isn't going to be everybody's $0.02.

cheers!

The Thinline wasn't made to give resonance tone, but to make it lighter. The Tele had become quite heavy. The walls of the Thinline are just too thick for it to have a great effect on the sound.

The chambered Telecaster, on the other hand, has more resonance to it, which definitely affects the sound. But you can't tell by looking at it.

But with a single horn, edge patch cable connector, smaller headstock,, and (for some models) strings mounted through the body, I'd definitely call them Telecasters. The weird ones with Floyd Rose, triple pups and large headstocks, on the other hand, I have a harder time seeing as Teles.

I've all sorts of Telecasters, bound and unbound, and I like them all just fine. 20 years ago I sold my '62 reissue Tele (MIJ bound, 3-color sunburst Tele w/ Rosewood fret board). I ended buying other Teles, but I stilled that guitar. Finally, after fionding out that I could never afford an Andy Summers Tele, I build own, with some minor differences I prefer.

My current favorite guitar is an Andy Summers inspired Tele with maple neck, and bound sunburst body. What a great looking and playing instrument.
