Hello All,

I ordered a '51 Custom Shop Nocaster NOS back in July. I picked it up last week from my local Fender Dealer and noticed there was a overhang/lip in the area where the neck bolts on to the body of the guitar. I am not sure if this is a result of poor workmanship on the part of the Custom Shop or if this was intentionally done to reflect the time period. As with my other Fender instruments (Stratocasters), I was expecting the neck to fit perfectly flush with the body of the guitar. Does anyone have knowledge of the '51 Nocaster and the design of its neck pocket?

Thanks!

Greg

That is exactly how they were made back then, and the Custom Shop details are accurate to the old ones. If the join were even, it would be wrong!

Enjoy your Nocaster. They are great guitars! :)

I wondered the same thing after getting my Dreamcaster partscaster tele back from my luthier and noticing the extra size in the neck pocket. It was cut to 1952 specs and has the oversized neck pocket as well. The I researched the old 50's Tele's and found out it was like that from 50-54.

The body is cut to 52 standards, they had the oversized neck pocket, it doesnt bother me when I play at all, I just wasnt aware that the 50's models had the oversized neck pocket. It isn't an issue structurally or otherwise.

According to the research by Musikraft the Esquire was the only one that didn't have it in the 50's. Not sure why though, surely there was some reason

not sure, it seems like the esquire being the first might have just been produced that way as a "prototype" of sorts then when the neck pickup was added they went to the oversized neck pocket? I really cant figure out any reason why. Anyone else have any input or ideas?

hum.......
i dont see where the addition of the neck pup would warrant
a oversized neck pocket.
maybe its that they intended different neck sizes as an option.
the sad part is that they didnt take the functions of the esquire switching
forward into other tele's. theres NOTHING out there that sounds like an
original esquire.
