Who do you think qualifies as a Tele Master?

Danny Gatton gets my vote!
One I can think of off the bat is Don Rich of the Buckaroos (Buck Owens), he was a great tele player, had his own distinct sound. There are so many good ones out there, Danny Gatton is probably the most underated master of the telecaster. He was pretty good. Also a master of the tele is Arlen Roth, he was a very good friend of Danny Gatton.

Hi there!
I think that Mike Stern and Uffe Steen Jensen are pretty awesome telecaster players!

Cheers,

Lars

It's Jim Root and John 5 for me.

What can I say, I play metal.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned these guys:

Ted Green

Scotty Anderson

each well deserving the honor of Tele-master

Beyond them: of course Danny, Roy, Albert, Don and the Hellecasters

Did anyone mention Roy Nichols?

best,
N--

Check out YouTube for Scotty Anderson and Danny Gatton videos: both are awesome players.

I thought of some more MASTERS -- Ray Flacke for one and Johnny Hiland (though I think he's playing a PRS now after Fender didn't want to do a Signature model for him).

There are some good videos at YouTube for Hiland: for a blind trailer trash hick from Maine, he sure can play!

best,
N--

Hey: I don't think anyone's being an "expert" by expressing opinions here - I've never heard of several players others respect and now I've checked some out via YouTube... names I would never have heard of before like Root (and my son's been to a Slipknot show).

But while we're soliciting "expert" opinions, I would say Steve Cropper of Booker T & the MG's is a tele-master: he always played a Tele in a soul setting/always got lots out of the guitar and added lots to the music.

Another big omission: Jimmy Bryant! This is the guy Leo Fender invented the Telecaster for in the first place! Actually, I believe the story goes that Leo 'borrowed' Merle Travis' Bigsby and used some ideas from that... (BTW: this is similar to the invention of the Stratocaster - which was designed/built with Eldon Shamblin, guitarist for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys -- I've always smiled at Tom Wheeler's interview with Leo in Guitar Player [and now in American Guitars] when Tom asks Leo "Did you ever meet any of the stars who played your guitars? Ever meet Hendrix? Clapton?" and Leo replies, matter of factly, "I met Bob Wills.")

Anyhow, Bryant remains a huge influence on many pickers to this day: he was scorned in Nashville before his death because he actually thought people should play for the thrill of making music first and foremost... the money was strictly secondary to him.

You can check him out at YouTube as well, with his steel partner Speedy West backing up Tennessee Ernie Ford on some boogie numbers. They were sometimes referred to as "the Dizzy Gillespie/Charlie Parker of country music" -- pretty accurate, IMHO!

--- edited to add Stratocaster tidbit ---
