Hi!

I was wondering if anyone else who has played the '72 deluxe reissue has noticed that when both pickups are selected, even if the neck volume is turned to 10, as long as the bridge volume is set to zero, there is no sound. But, if both pickups are selected, no matter that the neck volume might be zero, as long as the bridge volume is above zero, there is sound.

So, if both pickups are selected at once, why must the bridge volume always be above zero to get any sound, even if the neck volume's at ten?

Is this normal for this guitar? Or is it something I ought to worry about?

Hi bps133,

I haven't played one, but looking at the circuit diagram you can see that when both pickups are selected, both circuits are connected in parallel, so if either pot is turned all the way down, both circuits will be grounded, with no sound out, since the third lug of each pot is soldered to ground. It is possible that the neck volume pot still has a little resistance to ground, and isn't completely at ground when turned down all the way, so it may still allow a little sound through. So the operation that you've described is normal, nothing to worry about. :)

Yep. I have a 2006 model, and I can verify this phenomenon. It really caught me by surprise when I first discovered it.

does this happen with all the newer guitars as well? I'm thinking about picking up a 72 tele deluxe reissue in the coming weeks.

I'm new to a guitar with independent volume controls for each pickup. Ideally, how should each volume act when both pickups are selected? I guess they control the blend for each pickup?

Hi Rossome,

You are correct, two volumes in the circuit at the same time will blend the two pickups sound. It doesn't matter whether old or new, it is how it's wired under the pick guard that determines how it acts. If you get a 72 Tele Deluxe RI, it will be the same as described above.

Thanks for the reply! One more question. So, say I have both pickups selected, and the neck pickup is on 4 and the bridge is on 6. I get that I will have more of a bridge sound going on, but what would my overall volume be at? Like a 5?

Or does the guitar output at the volume of the loudest pickup or something?

Most guitars with this configuration (2 pickups with individual volumes and tones) work this way; Fender was just using the same wiring as a typical Gibson when they designed these back in the day.

I wouldn't say that when you are playing with the volume settings that it would average or that it would go with the output of the loudest pickup. I have a Collings 290 (it's like a Les Paul Special - 2 P-90 soapbars and individual controls). On my guitar the neck pickup tends to be a bit louder than the bridge pickup; I like to turn the volume of the neck pickup down a bit (to say "8"); it doesn't really cut the overall volume but it takes a bit of the sound of the neck pickup out of the mix (the neck pickup is "warmer" than the bridge pickup) and give it more chime. Turning either volume down below about "6" starts cutting the overall volume; it doesn't matter which volume you lower. You would get these same effects from the Tele Deluxe by mixing the volumes.
