Yeah, but how's the sustain? There's tradeoffs in everything.

Sustains great. Tones great. Just hard to believe it's not either Northern Ash or Mahogany.

My blackout tele is also rather heavy, and it also has an alder body. Different specimens of the same type of wood will have variations in weight.

Alder can be heavy. My Strat is alder and it's a pretty heavy one - although it's noticeably lighter than my Gibson... In my experience the variation is still much bigger when it comes to ash... it can go from feather weight to a back-breaker.

My USA alder strat has a nice weight @ 6or 7 lbs. same with my mim strat. I play'd a lot of vintage teles at GC, all light, all had issues- and the prices 2,000 and up. Couldn't get into the Hyway 1s or Bajas either. But I really wanted a tele so I bought sight unseen from MF and got the best tele I've play'd next to a friends '85 MIJ Squire. Just wish it had 22 frets. Nothings perfect.

Fighting for that last fret, eh?

Seriously, there is a wide range in woods even within specific families. As a rule Alder may be lighter than Ash. Or maybe not.

Two trees, same species, growing within a hundred feet of each other. One may be denser, hence heavier than the other due to less favorable growing conditions at that particular spot.

Add to that the variability of the saw cut, seasoning, and other variables.

If it sounds good and you like playing it, in the long run it really doesn't matter what's under the paint.

I think the heaviest Tele of all time was those old all-rosewood Tele's !

Not true. The heaviest I have found is the 1991 Special Black and Gold Teles. They are HEAVY.
